Pyro again! I can't exactly say more on the topic, since our...very long post has already said most of what I thought, but you mentioned wanting to talk about Oralie and Kenric's cache? (I have to admit I'm not sure where you're going with this, but wherever it is I'm sure it's going to be very interesting!)
(And I agree a lot with what you said on the ability restrictor. It was definitely cruel, and it's good the fandom and books are critiquing the Council's actions, but it's true that at that point the Council didn't really have any other options, because Sophie was absolutely a threat and would not listen to the Council's authority, and put the safety of the Lost Cities in pretty much immediate danger, given she broke a treaty and nearly started a war with the ogres, iirc. I'm not glad any of it happened to Sophie - or Dex, for that matter - but I understand why the Council did it. They're not meant to do good things, they're meant to keep order and balance in the world. It's so cool to be able to discuss this with someone else, there's so much nuance here, whether SM planned for it or not, and it's very interesting to look at.)
welcome back, pyro!! always nice to talk to you /g
we did cover a lot in that post, but there were some details about the whole cache situation that I didn’t get to talk about. It begins with Kenric, who said that if anything happened to him he wanted to give his cache to Sophie, which is very controversial amongst his peers when it’s found out. Clearly he wasn’t supposed to, yet for some reason he thought it was the best course of action and did so against the rules. This is not something you’d expect of a Councillor, but he was also willing to keep the knowledge that Oralie was working with the Black Swan secret. His devotion to her overruled anything else, so I wonder what he knew that made giving Sophie the cache worth it.
And that’s furthered with Oralie. He was an accomplice to her secret and she was an accomplice to his final wish. She got in a lot of trouble when she was found out, but she knew that would happen. And she did it anyways. I don’t think this is necessarily because she believed in whatever Kenric was trying to do (or even knew), but shows that she cares more about Kenric than her duties as councillor.
it kind of shows how the council are not the “perfect leaders” they’re thought to be. If I remember correctly, when Sophie was first introduced to the world it was described as perfect and that extended to their government and their leaders. Except we see they have no problem lying and bending the rules when it suits their needs. Kenric kept secrets, Oralie consorted with a rebel group and broke of their worlds most base rules (not having children as a councillor). And so much of this is revealed through the situation with the caches. That’s where we first start to see them breaking away from what they’re supposed to be and then more and more is revealed later on.
also I absolutely love how you phrased it. “They’re not meant to do good things, they’re meant to keep order and balance in the world.” Yes!! I think a lot of people (myself included) have this first assumption that oh to make a good world you have to good things, and while that’s true to an extent, there’s a whole other realm of hard decisions that need to be made. What to do when things go wrong. What to do when someone has broken the rules no is harming others. There’s no “good” solutions there, just whatever you decide is best.
this is so much fun to talk about with you, like genuinely. There’s so many little details and things scattered throughout the series and I don’t even think all of it was intentional but we can still find them!! And talk about them! They’re fascinating!!
this is what i’m talking about
ok last thing maybe - Steve is big into skin care but he never lets it on. I mean LOOK at that face. if he puts so much care into his hair, he would put equal care into his face. he probably has rly expensive skin care (like high end moisturizers, cleansers, and masks) but he hides it from everyone, until he lets robin use one of his masks bc "robin your face is too dull dude you need some brightening"
OKAY YES?? im HERE for Steve being into skin care??? he has a whole cabinet of Stuff. his shower?? that caddy is full of product. it goes beyond the hair.
Steve stays the night at Robin’s after a party or something and he’s in her bathroom brushing his teeth and she hears him SCREAM and she runs in and he’s holding up her face wash with a horrified look of his face like ‘do not tell me you put this on your skin Robin middle-name Buckley’
