I haven't read the raven cycle yet, but from fanarts its a group of boys and the one (1) singular girl, so I'm scared its that kind of stories: too focused on romance and who-will-it-be or general sexist content :/
I heard good from it otherwise so I wondered if you could tell me about it, both good and bad
I’m going to try to not make this spoilery, but there might be a few small things that slip through!
The raven cycle is a story about people, but unlike many YA stories about people, it doesn’t necessarily focus exclusively on the romance throughout it. Romance is an overarching theme, but the plot and characters are significantly more complex than “everyone wants to date the girl!” I was kinda scared when I first went into it for the same reasons!
I do not think trc falls into these tropes, luckily. Blue (the one girl) does have an all male friend group, but it doesn’t end up being the “all these guys are just in love with her” idea, because EVERYONE in the group is slightly in love with each other (paraphrased from an actual quote in the book). I don’t feel like there ends up being a “who will she choose!?” thing because her decisions are somewhat final, any real options are sorted out early, and the entire story isn’t focused around her and her romantic life. There isn’t a weird thing where all her friends low key want to date her because She Is Girl, and she has healthy relationships with her female family members that actually matter in the story.
On the first read of it, you may be worried that it’ll get weird with her, but the question of it goes away a little bit into the story. If anyone in the story has everyone wanting to date them, it isn’t the only girl!
Others have felt a little iffy about Blue not having any really female friends, but I personally feel like the female support network she has makes up for that.
obviously (from my username) I’m not the best person to go to for the cons of trc, but I don’t think you have to worry about the Only One Girl In A Male Friend Group Thing.
I really hope that actually ended up somewhat coherent, I’m working off of very little sleep here lol.
thank you so much for the ask, and I hope-if you end up reading it- you enjoy it! Feel free to let me know what you end up thinking :)
