Word Count: (long one – full story WIP)

Warnings: ritualism, potential smut, virgin sacrifice, trauma, kidnapping, ayahuasca, shamans, human torture, violence (weapons), ancient cultures, nudity, blood rituals.

            Daniel lands in Pucallpa, Peru. They house an international airport in that region, and it was the closest landing site to the temple of Pachamama, the Earth Goddess of the Incans. Daniel was assigned to find investigate a series of disappearances of young women. The local authorities were uninterested and Daniel was charged with finding out what was happening to these girls. Daniel was glad to get away from some of the other drama in his life, and took the assignment happily, he just didn’t know he was dealing with a madman.

And???  What fucking right had The Spanish (and Portuguese and English) people to conquer and enslave Indigenous people? Were Indigenous people “murdering, cannibalizing and torturing for no reason at all” Europeans? It was the latter who decided to do the first contact with a foreign place, with a Bible in one hand and a sword in the other,  forcing the natives to change to the “right” way (i.e. their way), while conquering and pillaging a land that didn’t belong to them. 

(If by any chance Indigenous people didn’t like their own practices, they should’ve been have the freedom to change their customs and life styles by themselves.)

Oh, and if you ever take the time to get your eyes off the Bible glued with silicone into your hands you’ll realize that some of the practices certain (not all) Indigenous people did, as Cannibalism, had cultural and religious motives for them. Cannibalism may be a taboo for us now, but it’s an act that has been present since pre-historical times, has been practiced by Neanderthals, Homo erectus and other hominins before the Homo sapiens, and has shaped human history as we know today. And the truth is that, for the Europeans, cannibalism was nothing more than a pretext to justify the Conquest.

For real? The Pre-Columbian America has some of the most developed and interesting cultures ever. They certainly weren’t “wild animals”. The Mayans were the ones who created the “0″, had a rich writing system, and a great understanding of astronomy and mathematics, allowing them to elaborate a highly-advanced calendar. Machu Picchu, created by the Incans, has/had one of the complex water management systems around, developed in a way that protected their farming from erosion. The Aztecs loved music, poetry, painting and sculpture.

So! I’m going to run a campaign set on a continent that is very much Ixalan meets Chult. Some of the humans who live there are inspired by Precolombian Mesoamerican cultures, primarily the Mayans and Aztecs. As this is going to be an IRL campaign, I’m going to be using minis and all those terrain bits I’ve been crafting lately. But, there aren’t a lot of Mesoamerican-style official D&D minis, so I have to look elsewhere. This post is about that elsewhere.

Let’s go through some of the options I’ve found. If you know of any other good options, please let me know! 

Most of these are metal minis, and none of them are going to have quite the level of sophisticated detail that you’ll find in WizKids minis. Some of them are nice nonetheless, but many of them suffer from what might be called “miniature hideousness”, which is a common ailment for metal miniatures whereby the face is a contorted caricature. We’ll want to avoid that as much as possible. We’ll also want to avoid lines that make the Mesoamerican cultures villainous or barbaric, or rely on stereotypical depictions. 

1. Foundry

Foundry has a line of both Aztec and Incan minis. They come in sets of 6 for £12.00, or about $15.50USD at the time of this post.

2. Gringo 40′s

Gringo 40′s has Mayan and Aztecs minis, sold individually at £1.60-2.00 ($2.00-2.50USD)

3. Outpost

Outpost has collections for Aztecs (gallery here), Mayans, and Incans. They also have a website that appears to have been designed in the mid-1990s, so good luck with that. Prices are around  £7.50 for 8 or so figures.

4. Acheson Creations

A line of Aztec minis, at around $6 for a pack of 4 figures. 

5. Eureka 

Eureka has a line of Aztec minis. $2.50 for a set of 4.

6. Mirliton

A small range of Aztec (and one Mayan) minis, around $1.60 per figure.

7. Paymaster

A line of Aztec minis, perhaps delving into the fantasy side of things, with some leaning on fanservice. Around $8/figure.

Conclusion

I want a movie/tv series with a good story, that’s accurate to the mythology, without being Hollywood whitewashed, and has either exceptional CGI/costumes and makeup or just shows the creatures in human form with really good dialogue to make up for the missing visual.
