why are you giving up on flickr? is it the community that is lacking do you just find that you aren’t using it as much? 500 pix is a pretty good photo sharing community to like and be liked by other photogs.

I wanted to give up on flickr because of what they have done with the new changes. It does feel like they are now trying to cater to the smartphone kind of like what Instagram did. Which is fine. 

But what I was also upset with was that they increased the price for their "pro" account. One thing I love about their "pro" account even though I am not a pro is that we have unlimited storage.

I decided to answer it as if I was addressing your son, or just about any child - I think it's important to combine facts with a language that is approachable and understandable by a child, but without neglecting the actual facts. I mean, if I'd said ‘it's a loanword from the Hindi word châmpo’, your son would probably be as confused, but by expanding the answer just a tidbit, he learns something new and might even start getting interested in ‘funny words’, and voilá, a linguist-in-the-making is born. 

A curious mind is the greatest thing on the planet, and I think it's important to always try to remember our own childhood when faced with seemingly odd questions. The only reason why a question is silly to us, is because we either take the answer for granted, or our mind doesn't conceptualise the world in the same way as a child.

Ah, tell your son that that's a brilliant question, and that I understand why it must seem confusing that the very thing we use to clean ourselves with is made up of the words sham and poo, two things no person would want to put in their hair.

Now, the reason why it's actually called shampoo has to do with the way the English language has changed over the years, and your son probably know that English has borrowed words from other languages, like pizza from Italian, or baguette from French and the same goes with the word shampoo, it is a loanword as well. 

But rather than being a loanword from Italian or French, shampoo is a loanword from Hindi, a language spoken in India, and it comes from the word चाँपो, (pronounced like châmpo) which translates as ‘to massage, and knead the scalp’, and what do you use your shampoo for? Well, your hair!

It's quite interesting actually, shampoo wasn't used by Europeans before the 18th century, and it was introduced to the British public in 1814 when a Bihari businessman called Sake Dean Mahomed opened the UK's first shampooing saloon - Mahomed's Steam and Vapour Sea Water Medicated Baths - in Brighton, in the far south of England.

Yup. It is allowed. But you need to request permission in writing. I hear it's been done. But obviously most people don't.

Eh... So yes. I guess it's a concern. But on the other hand, once I graduate I will never have the opportunity to take a year off and spend it studying a language. Or will I? I dunno...

a good portion of people in my class took a year to do this or earn an MPH at some prestigious school.
