Yup. It is allowed. But you need to request permission in writing. I hear it's been done. But obviously most people don't.

Eh... So yes. I guess it's a concern. But on the other hand, once I graduate I will never have the opportunity to take a year off and spend it studying a language. Or will I? I dunno...

a good portion of people in my class took a year to do this or earn an MPH at some prestigious school.

Korea sounds like it'd be a blast. But I doubt learning Korean would be as helpful as learning Spanish -- especially since I'm hoping to practice in Southern California.
