[Sorry, I know this took forever for me to post, college hit me like a ton of bricks and I have been absolutely swamped]
(This is a quick little thingy I wrote about Immortallaughtersâ wonderful Arcana OC Beatrice, meeting my OC, I hope you like it! @immortallaughter)
Typically, Belladoris would avoid places like this. It wasnât that she felt unsafe in this part of Vesuvia, itâs just that she really didnât go here that often, and really didnât enjoy feeling lost. Â She stopped and looked around, eyes landing on a sign that read âThe Rowdy Raven.â Well that looked familiar, even though she couldnât exactly explain why. As soon as she opened the door, the smell of ale, sweat, and spoiled hay attacked her senses. She shifted the weight of her basket to one hand, and lifted a corner of her veil to cover her nose and mouth, somewhat obscuring the smell. She walked further into the building, her slippers sticking to the floor. Her eyes scanned the room, the tavern wench seemingly absent, for the least frightening person to approach. Belladorisâs eyes met the eyes of another woman across the room. She was tall, with a scar on her face. How she wasnât blind in that eye, Belladoris didnât know, but she didnât really think it would be kind to ask either. She made her way over, carefully avoiding anyone she deemed âcreepy,â which at 12:00 at a tavern is practically everyone. The woman didnât move and inch, and set Belladoris with a suspicious stare.
âIâm sorry to intrude, but Iâm afraid Iâm not sure where Iâm going. Do you know how to get to the flooded district?â She felt the other tavern patrons eyes shift to her, and she worried she had said the wrong thing, somehow.
The woman raised an eyebrow and said âItâs a long way from here.â
âOh,â How did she get so entirely turned around? âHow could I get there from he-â She trailed of, eyes drawn to the mark on the womanâs wrist. Itâs meaning was lost on her, but the way the woman pulled her wrist of of Belladorisâ view wasnât. âSorry.â She apologized.
âIt would be easier if I showed you.â She stood up from her stool, and Belladoris noted that this woman was much, much, taller than her. Oddly enough it made her feel safer, rather than threatened. âCome on, I was just wasting time here anyway.â Belladoris scuttled after her, her heavy basket and short legs slowing her down.
âIâm. Um. Thank you.â Belladoris said, when she caught up. âI donât even know your name.â It was a weird way to ask for someoneâs name, but she was having a weird day.
âBeatrice. You?â She said. She didnât seem to say much.
âHm.â They were silent for a long stretch.
âYou-â They began to speak at the same time and abruptly stopped. They burst into laughter, for several moments. They had to stop walking they were laughing so hard. After they had collected their bearings, Beatrice spoke again.
âSo? I take it youâre new in town? When I first got here, I had a hard time navigating around town, too.â
Belladoris blushed. âIâve actually lived here my whole life. At least, thatâs what Iâve been told.â She said with a sense of bittersweet amusement.
âWhat youâve been told?â Beatrice asked, her curiosity piqued.
âYeah. I must have bumped my head a couple years back. My memories from anytime before that are really foggy. But itâs okay!â She said brightly, âIâm not the type of person who wants to live in the past.â
âThatâs weird. Not because youâre weird!â Beatrice clarified, âI just mean. Iâve went through something similar. I have foggy memories too!â
âThatâs odd. I wonder if itâs connected?â She mused, almost to herself than to the woman next to her.
âSo whatâs with the wrist mark?â
âWhy do you want to know?â Beatrice said, guarded.
âI figured it meant something when I saw it but, I didnât know what it meant.â She turned to look directly to Beatrice âAre you going to tell me that mark means youâre a super-assassin on a mission to kill me? Is that why youâre taking me to the flooded district?â She said jokingly.
Beatrice gasped and glared at Belladoris. âThey told me you would be smart.â She took a step towards Doris, before she cracked a smile and burst out laughing. âYou should have seen you face!â
âUgh! Beatrice!â Belladoris slapped the taller womanâs arm, playfully. âI should box your ears for thatâŚâ She trailed off. âOoooooor, I could tickle you!â She reaches with her free hand to poke Beatriceâs side but before she could, Beatrice had already started running farther ahead of her. âWait! Beatrice! Iâm shorter and weighted down. I canât keep up!â She screamed as she ran as fast as her legs would carry her. She caught up to where Beatrice had stopped. âBea-â She was staring ahead, with an indecipherable expression on her face. Oh. The flooded district was worse than Doris had remembered.
âThank you very much for your helpâ Belladoris said brightly, before adding bashfully, âIf youâd like, I could- â She reached into her basket and pulled out a few coins, but before she could even finish her sentence, Beatrice had already shook her head.
âIâm good. Showing you around wasnât that difficult, besides, I can always ask for a favor, later.â They laughed and shook hands. Beatrice turned to walk back, but kicked the basket that Belladoris had just put down. Itâs contents spilled out and she instinctively bent down to pick up whatever had fallen out.
âWhat are you going to do with that?â She said, her tone instantly darkening. The item in question was a long rope with a weight tied to the end of it. She might have been a former mercenary, but assisting in a suicide for free was not a service she offered.
âI think it might help me scan the bottom of the area. See how deep the water goes.â Belladoris said absent-mindedly. âHave you seen my notebook, it should be under that stuff?â
âYou have any family?â Trice would need to know who to take her home to, it wasnât like she was about to leave.
âNot in the flooded district, or at least I donât think? Well I guess no one has family here anymore, yâknow, because itâs all abandoned.â She pulled out her notebook and smiled âFound it! And really thank you for walking me here, but I gotta lot of work to do before sunset.â Her eyes searched the top of the building, looking for something.
âWell what work do you have to do?â
âIâm going to scan the district to see how high the water level is.â Doris said, trying not to sound angry, even though she felt she had explained the concept before. She spotted a crevice in the wall of a nearby building. Smiling she unpinned the veil from her head and set it in the dirt free basket. Without her veil Beatrice noticed her hair was wrapped in braided updo with ribbon. âIâve got this. Donât worry!â She slung the tangle of rope around her trunk and starting scaling one of the buildings.
âWhat are you doing!â At this point Trice has no idea what was going on, and she didnât think Doris had a clue, either.
âI need to sit in the middle of this!â Belladoris screamed down. She grabbed one of the ladders on the roof of the building and glared at it. âDo you think thisâll reach to the other side?â
âThe other side of what?â
âThe road!â She slammed the large ladder down, itâs end just barely catching the building on the other side. She shoved it a few feet farther out. âThat looks balanced!â
âWait! Are you going to crawl on that?â Trice yelled, Dorisâ odd actions beginning to make sense. âHold on!â She sent out an ice sheet over the ladder and the buildings where they met, to strengthen them so Doris can cross safely.
âWoah!!! Thank you!â Doris climbed out until she was directly between the buildings and dropped her rope. It fell hard and fast, and she lurched forward, dangerously close to slipping into the grey water below. She held fast to the rope, and waited for a few seconds to ensure that it had hit the bottom. She pulled it out, and looked at where the sludgy water had stained the new rope. Grabbing a ribbon from her hair, she tied it to the rope, to indicate where the water was the highest. She moved it again to where the street once was and does the same thing again. With her other hair ribbon removed her hair falls freely down her back, brushing her hips. Seemingly satisfied, she climbed down.
âI can take this home and measure it! Then weâll know how much we need to drain!â Doris replied cheerfully. âNice ice magic, by the way. I donât think Iâve met someone who could do that before!â
Beatrice blinked once or twice, trying to process what had come out of Belladorisâ mouth. âYou talk much too fast.â
âOh. Whoops.â She looked bashful for a moment. âHey. You seem pretty cool. Do you like pranks?â
Beatrice raised a single eyebrow and said in a wry tone, âWhat do you have in mind.â
âSoap in the marketplace fountain.â Belladoris replied.
