“This film tells stories from inhabitants of the Stone Village in China, home to 220 Naxi ethnic families, and a living example of the value of conserving biocultural heritage. The Stone Village is located in the upper reaches of the Yangzi River in Yunnan Province, Southwest China, and comprises 12 ‘natural villages’ spread across a mountain valley. The 12-minute film explores how farmers work collectively to sustain efficient water management systems, save seed varieties, including those connected to ancient cultural practices, and respond to changes in climate and market demand. Their customary water management system has lessened the impact of recurring drought compared to neighbouring villages and prevents conflict through fair distribution. At a meeting in the Stone Village, China, in June 2015, 18 indigenous mountain communities from China, Nepal, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Peru called for support to strengthen traditional natural resource management systems, especially water management. The Stone Village Declaration was developed by the International Network of Mountain Indigenous Peoples (INMIP).”

Reflections on Development going forward.

I attended two very interesting talks – one at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) by Vijayandara Rao Co-author of the World Bank (WB) report –  ‘Localising Development: Does Participation Work’ and then a presentation by David Satterthwaite on the United Nations (UN) post Millennium Development Goals 2015 Goals – at UCL, organised by the Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU).
