The project, which dates back to the 1950s, has been carried forward by three successive generations of scientists. Rather than treating the highland lake as a one-off study location, each cohort has built on the infrastructure, datasets, and methods left behind by its predecessors, effectively turning the lake itself into a long-running, open-ended experiment.
The roughly tenfold expansion in physical coverage highlights a quieter point often missing from short research cycles: some of the most consequential ecological outputs only accumulate once a single scientist's career is treated as a single data point, and the next generation inherits the baseline.
