i love the thought of jj/shane n the insane part abt it is that jj is the only person of color (other than his mom) that shane regularly interacts with, so i think their relationship whether romantic or platonic just has this charge of like You See Me especially since theyre always in such white and historically (as well as most likely currently) racist spaces. theres been a bit of chatter thru the asks abt fetishistic ilya and imagine how fucked up it would be if jj was Seeing that and just so upset at how his best friend is being objectified n dehumanized by this unbearable white dude n finally bringing it up to shane n shane having to go thru the ultimate humiliation of either admitting that he doesnt see it n that this is just Normal to him orrrrr (infinitely worse) that he doesnt mind it, ilyas a good guy he just has some preferences, maybe shanes even forced to divulge that he likes that attention. idk i just think it would be such an interesting intersection and outsider pov on shaneilyaâs insane dynamic (ps please dont take this as me pressuring u with a fic idea, i just thought this was an interesting sandbox u might like to play in as a fellow Understander n lover of these characters)
yes. i agree completely. the absolute horror of jj seeing his best friend, who has suffered alongside him, who he has watched suffer in predominantly white, straight spaces, try to manoeuvre hockey culture, be traumatised by his ex-teammates' reactions to his sexuality, that friend, who jj is extremely protective over, being brutalised by this rich white dude. i don't think jj will know, for a long time, the extent of the awful shit ilya has shane doing. and the way he eventually finds out is going to be devastating, because i doubt it'll come from shane's lips. but he does know ilya is his sugar daddy, and he knows who ilya is, and the weird, freaky, diddy-combs level of shit he gets up to (without the predation, at least, in terms of age). he can put two and two together. and even setting that aside, i'm not sure jj would be thrilled about the sugar daddy thing at all. he'd support shane. but his weird russian nepo baby? dangerous.

he's been treated as a prince since he was a child. he was taught boundaries, but he learned at the same time, from watching his father and his older brother, that boundaries and consent don't really matter for someone like him. he got whatever he wanted, when he wanted it, through his money and his status and his charm, all at once. his maxim is essentially "i want it, so why wouldn't i get it?" what matters to ilya more than anything in the world is his pleasure and his desires, and nothing has ever shown him otherwise. andeven when something has happened: when one of his victims went to the police, or he injured someone by accident, or he caused real damage to someone's property when he was younger, his friends and alexei did everything in their power to make sure little ilyusha didn't have to bear any of it. brushed it off him like an ant on his sleeve.
so i don't think he really cares how "well" the nose boop will be received. he cares that he wants to do it.
ilya hasn't really had any long-term partners, and the ones he did have he was cheating on. like everyone else, they treated him like a prince, and he used them. treated them well enough, but it was more quid pro quo than anything. most of ilya's life and relationships have been transactional. it's all he's really experienced.

SD Ilya repeatedly telling Shane âyou love Ilya Romanovâ struck me as I was reading as a cocky typical Ilya-ism, him telling Shane despite what got them there, and whatâs being done to him, Shane is loving all of it. And now reading your answers about Ilya not necessarily falling for Shane and Shane even further away from that than Ilya made me curious about Ilyaâs characterization in this fic.
If for some very strange reason Shane did fall in love with Ilya, and subsequently refused his money or even gifts because he loved him and doesnât need the material stuff blah blah blah how would ilya take that? Would it freak him out? Run away? Ghost Shane? Would it endear him even further? Another reaction of Shaneâs that he find endlessly fascinating? Does my curiosity even matter bc in this world, the possibility of Shane falling for Ilya in such a way is zero?
well, mm. i don't actually think this would happen. but hypothetically, if it did, no, i don't think shane would be quick to reject the material stuff. love doesn't necessarily take away from the fact that he genuinely appreciates being spoilt, and ilya genuinely likes to spoil him. it's so ingrained in their dynamic that if shane were to fall in love with ilya, his lifestyle and his money and the way he acts about it, how he earns it in the first place, would all be things shane was in love with too. it's not realistic for him to suddenly reject any of that.
Hmm the ask about sbs having âpowerâ over Ilya is very interesting. Like the only thing he has to leverage is his company, he doesnât really have any pull over Ilya outside of being desired. I honestly doubt he could say no to anything Ilya wants to do unless heâs not physically there (like saying fuck you youâre crazy if you think Iâm leaving the country with you). Do you have power over someone who could have you disappeared without a second thought if they got bored of you? What would you do to make sure they donât?
thank you. i've humoured these asks because i understand the intention behind them, but, in every sense of the word, ilya has all the power over shane. the power imbalance is insane. all of shane's life hangs in ilya's balance, and ilya can take it all away whenever he wants. and shane does understand how far his "choice" actually extends. it's easy for him to say no to things like rejecting certain gifts or certain vacations, because he knows ilya doesn't really mind in those cases. but sex? no. he has no choice there. he has a practical choice in the sense that he could physically not be around him. though that would lead to other consequences. but outside of that, if he were to say no during sex and ilya really wanted to, ilya would continue regardless. shane is very smart about this. he knows how far he can push and how far he can't, and what to say to get out of things, when to be blasĂŠ and when to just shut up and take it. but that doesn't change the fact that he is way out of his depth. shane has a temporary key to the castle, but the castle is ilya's, after all.

everything comes back to cash in the end, all the things shane believes he needs at the moment are money related: money to get his degree, money for a new place, money for drugs, eventually.
