Oiwa is a famous Yokai from Japanese folklore. Oiwa is described a disfigured woman with hair loss and a sagging left eye. In life Oiwa was married to a Ronin named Iemon. Iemon fell in love with an upper class woman who had a lot of money so he wanted to get Oiwa out of the way. He had someone in the rich woman's family send Oiwa some poisoned medicine; however the medicine did not kill her; it disfigured her and caused her hair to fall out in clumps and her left eye to sag. Upon seeing herself Oiwa became depressed and once she learned that it was Iemon whi betrayed her, she couldn't take it anymore and killed herself. When Iemon learned that Oiwa had died he went on with the wedding; however when he went to kiss his new bride, she had the face of Oiwa so he beheaded her. The ghost of Oiwa followed Iemon throughout his life with him seeing her face on everything until he died. The story of Oiwa comes from a famous Kabuki play called "Yotsuya Kaidan".
