    This hairstyle is a variation of the Ichogaeshi style, which appears to be the midpoint between it and the Momoware style. The “wings” of the topknot look distinctly like the “wings” of the Ichougaeshi style, while the use of kanoko creates a much fuller look compared to the usual fabric wraps used for the Ichougaeshi style.

    Today, is worn by maiko during Setsubun or by the senior maiko of Pontocho as part of a series of hairstyles signifying the arrival of her erikae. In the Edo period, it was probably worn by single town girls between the ages of 17-19 years old. It was never worn by women of the samurai or court noble classes.

     This hairstyle appears to be a variation of either the Kanto Fukurasuzume or the Mittsuwa-kuzushi hairstyle. Due to it’s similarity to the Mittsuwa-kuzushi style, it may be meant for older girls in their late 20s.
