    This hairstyle is a variation of the ichogaeshi style and was worn only by girls and young women during the Meiji period. It appears that the youngest girls with long enough hair wore momoware, then transitioned to ume-ware or toujin-mage, and then finally moved on to the ichogaeshi hairstyle. Ume-ware may have been originally known as Ume-musubi (梅結び).

    Unlike momoware, this hairstyle is not closed at the top of the topknot. This  way you can see the tegara at the top and bottom of the topknot. It is distinct from wareshinobu, which is created in a completely different way. With toujin-mage, kanokodome cannot be used as they are with the wareshinobu hairstyle.

     It was widely popular among all women of Japanese society. The lower base of the topknot, giving it the appearance that it has been crushed, is what gives this style its name. Enhancements to this topknot, in the form of kanzashi, kanoko, and chirimen, would help to identify the age and status of the wearer.

  This hairstyle was popular from the beginning to the end of the Edo period. This style is a variation of the Maru-mage hairstyle, which was popular among married women. The three loops are of uniform size and stem from the topknot of the Maru-mage hairstyle. As best I can understand, this hairstyle was popular among mistresses and concubines, as the Maru-mage was a style specifically reserved for married women.

    This hairstyle is a variation of Murasaki Tenjin, which was first seen on courtesans in the pleasure quarters. This hairstyle was especially popular among courtesans of the “Koshi” rank, which is one level beneath those of the “Tayuu” rank. It eventually became popular among fashionable women outside of the pleasure quarters.

    This hairstyle is a variation of the Ichogaeshi style, which appears to be the midpoint between it and the Momoware style. The “wings” of the topknot look distinctly like the “wings” of the Ichougaeshi style, while the use of kanoko creates a much fuller look compared to the usual fabric wraps used for the Ichougaeshi style.

 This hairstyle was first seen on courtesans in the pleasure quarters. This hairstyle was especially popular among courtesans of the “Koshi” rank, which is one level beneath those of the “Tayuu” rank. It eventually became popular among fashionable women outside of the pleasure quarters. Once it left the pleasure quarters, it would’ve been worn by merchant class women of the shitamachi areas of Tokyo.

    In the Edo period, it began to be worn by town-girls in the old city of Tokyo. Eventually, however, this hairstyle became the second most popular among housewives after the Maru-mage. It also seems that this hairstyle was appropriate for widows to wear during their period of mourning.
