The Ice Master
I was asked yesterday what an Ice Master is and I was so silly that I deleted the question instead of answering. Sorry.
So the Ice Master is the Master of a ship. He was responsible for all matters of navigation, pilotage and the sailing of the ship. For this reason, aids to navigation, nautical charts, compasses, nautical tables and the corresponding astronomical instruments fell within his area of responsibility, as well as some other tasks, but you can read about them here if you wish.

The Ice Master has this title because he is particularly skilled and experienced in Arctic navigation. Most of the Ice Masters had also gained experience on Whaler and had thus acquired their navigational skills in the area of ice. That is the whole secret behind this rank.

As a veteran of over 40 whaling voyages and with specialist knowledge of steering a ship through ice floes, Donald Manson joined Edward Augustus Inglefield and the crew of HMS Phoenix on 9 March 1854. Manson accompanied Edward Augustus Inglefield on all three of his voyages to the Arctic regions. The first was on board Lady Franklin's private steam ship the Isabel in 1852 during which, Inglefield was the first navigator to travel the furthest north into the Smith Sound off Greenland's north west coast. Manson was Harbourmaster at Peterhead in Aberdeenshire until 1871. (Royal Collection Trust)
