Podcast recommendation: Hope Is A Verb
Hopepunk rec
Are we listing bizarre things we've seen in fanfic?
I once read a Harry Potter fic about Draco Malfoy falling in love with an apple. It was very emotional and he ended up taking a bite out of her because he couldn't resist, even though he knew it was a bad idea, and then freaked out about it.
There is an entire fandom called the Human Domestication Guide that's about a species of sentient alien plants that came and conquered human civilization with the intent of making sure everyone is safe and healthy and happy, except if you disagree with that, you're forced to become their pet and be tenderly cared for against your will. There's a lot of drugs, consensual and otherwise, and this weird pet relationship the plants have with humans does not preclude sexual relationships with them. Lots of human characters in this universe are very into this entire situation in a kinky way and become pets voluntarily.
I can genuinely say one of the most incredible fanfics I've ever read, and which changed my life irrevocably, is a 2012-era Avengers fic with tons of non-sexual ageplay. I still reread it semi-regularly, and would recommend it to everyone if I could bear to admit I've read such a thing. It is among the fluffiest, most comforting, most deeply wholesome things I've ever read. Seriously.
We are indeed discussing weird things in fic
The last two I don't find weird I mean, I write Daddy kink and ageplay myself, sooooo and the sentient plants one is JUST on this side of I'd probably read that out of morbid curiosity
...actually, now that I think about it, that plant one reminds me of the Sterek (?) fic where they are actual literal flowers and fall in love???? I think I'm remembering that one correctly
BUT THE FIRST ONE. When you said he took a bite out of the apple, I almost lost it 😂
💖💻📥?
💖my action, and my characterization. Or maybe my dialogue? I guess my dialogue, since that usually forms the core of a scene i build around (but then that comes back to characterization, then, doesnt it?)
💻 yes, research galore! Usually its just deep fandom wiki dives though. And in-universe documentation like the TNG technical Manual, or a copy of a ‘Jane’s Ships’ equivalent. For like, real world stuff? I mean, I’ve broken out an old medical textbook that is just. In my room apparently to write more anatomically-accurate smut.
📥 which segues neatly into this last one, smut! Not particularly any individual fic, tbh, but smut gets so many silent readers (and. I am guilty of being one, I won’t deny) that getting one, especially in smaller fandoms or rarepairs inside of big fandoms (*coughgarashirdominancecough* who said that) is always a highlight of my day.
Happy birthday!!!
