The first time Hyunjin pays your rent, you cry in the bathroom. You lock the door, sit on the edge of the tub, stare at your phone, and feel something complicated claw up your chest.
Relief. Shame. Gratitude. Fear.
Because nobody has ever made your life easier before.
Not like this. Not without expecting something ugly in return. But Hyunjin had just shrugged when you tried to protest.
âYou were stressed,â he said simply. âI hate seeing you stressed.â
Like it was that easy. Like caring about you was the most natural thing in the world.
You met him at an art exhibit you almost skipped.
Your friend begged you to come. Free champagne, pretty paintings, rich people pretending to understand abstract sculpture.
You went because your power bill was overdue and you did not want to sit in your cold apartment thinking about it.
He stood out immediately. Tall. Ethereal. Expensive looking without trying. He could have easily passed as a prince. His hair fell into his eyes when he leaned closer to study a painting, and you caught yourself staring longer than you meant to.
He noticed. Of course he did.
Hyunjin turned, met your gaze, and instead of looking away like most men do when caught, he smiled. Not cocky. Just curious.
You tried to look somewhere else but he walked over anyway.
âWhat do you see when you look at this?â he asked, gesturing to the painting.
You glanced at it again.
âHonestly?â
âPlease.â
âIt looks like the artist went through a breakup and decided everyone else should suffer too.â
He laughed. Not polite laughter. Real laughter.
That was the moment everything tilted.
Dinner happened a week later.
Then he asked you, very calmly, over dessert, âCan I be blunt with you?â
You said yes because you are bad at telling beautiful men no.
âI like taking care of people,â he said. âEspecially people who deserve it.â
You blinked. âOkay.â
âI know arrangements can sound cold,â he continued, voice gentle. âBut I would like to help you. Financially. Practically. However you need. No pressure. No ownership. Just honesty.â
You knew what he meant. A sugar arrangement.
You should have walked away but, you asked the question sitting heavy on your chest. âWhat would you expect from me?â
He didnt hesitate.
âYour time. Your company. Your honesty. Nothing you dont want to give.â
No manipulation. No rehearsed charm.
You went home and stared at your cracked ceiling for hours.
Then you said yes.
â
The first time you slept with him, it didnt feel like an arrangement, which terrified you more than anything.
Hyunjin moved slowly, like he was memorizing you. His hands were warm, deliberate, never rushing. When he kissed you, it was soft at first, testing, waiting for you to lean in and you did.
By the time you reached his bedroom, you were already breathing harder.
He paused before undressing you.
âStill okay?â he asked quietly.
You nodded.
âTell me if youre not. Ever.â
Nobody had ever said that to you before.
He took his time. Clothes sliding off. Fingers brushing skin. His mouth warm at your throat, then lower until your head tipped back and your hand clutched his hair.
You expected hunger and instead you got patience.
Afterward, you lay tangled in expensive sheets, your cheek against his chest, listening to his heartbeat slow.
He traced lazy circles along your spine.
âYoure thinking too much,â he murmured.
âI always do.â
âYoure safe here.â
Safe.
You almost laughed at the word.
You didnt realize until later that you slept through the entire night without waking once.
â
Groceries appearing at your door after you mentioned you were running low.
A coat when winter hit. A new phone when yours cracked.
He never made a show of it.
Sometimes you wondered if he even realized how life changing those things were.
Weeks blurred into months. You learned his habits.
He painted when he was stressed. He got quiet when something bothered him. He pretended he was less sensitive than he really was.
He learned yours too.
That you drank coffee instead of eating when anxious. That you chewed your lip when overwhelmed. That you pretended you were fine when you were absolutely not.
One night he caught you staring at your banking app.
Without a word, he took your phone, locked it, set it aside.
âCome here,â he said.
You resisted for about three seconds before he pulled you into his lap.
âI dont like that look on your face.â
âWhat look?â
âThe one that says you think youre alone.â
He pressed a kiss beneath your ear.
âYoure not alone anymore.â
It got dangerous when you stopped keeping track of the arrangement. When you stayed over even when you werent scheduled to. When he fell asleep with his arm wrapped around your waist like it belonged there. When he started calling you just to ask what you ate.
â
One night you arrived at his penthouse and saw heels by the door but they werent yours.
Your chest went cold.
Hyunjin appeared seconds later, surprised. âYoure early.â
âClearly,â you replied.
A model stepped out from the hallway. Beautiful. Effortless.
She smiled politely and left soon after, but the damage was already done.
You felt stupid for assuming you were special.
You kept your voice flat. âYou didnt mention you had company.â
His brow furrowed. âIt was work.â
âYou sleep with all your work contacts?â
His eyes flashed.
âYou know thats not what this is.â
âWhat is this then?â you demanded, your voice finally breaking. âBecause I thought I understood, but maybe I dont.â
Silence stretched.
âI think I forgot Im replaceable.â
The hurt on his face was immediate.
âYou arent replaceable.â
âYou arent mine,â you shot back. âIm not yours.â
He stepped closer.
âYou could have told me you were uncomfortable.â
âYou could have told me sheâd be here.â
âI dont know how to do this without falling for you.â
The words hung between you. Hyunjin went very still.
âYou think Im not already gone for you?â he said quietly.
Your heart slammed.
âI tried to keep this simple,â he continued. âBut you made it impossible.â
Tears burned your eyes.
âYou scare me,â he admitted.
âWhy?â
âBecause losing you would hurt.â
Love is messy when it starts from something transactional.
There were fights. Misunderstandings. Nights you almost walked away because needing him felt too terrifying.
But he never let distance grow for long.
He showed up. Every time.
The worst fight came three months later when you told him you wanted to stop taking his money.
His face went pale.
âDid I make you feel bought?â
âNo,â you said quickly. âThat is not it.â
âThen why?â
âBecause if this is real, I need to know youd still want me without it.â
His voice dropped.
âId want you if you had nothing. Id want you if I had nothing.â
âYou say that now.â
Anger flashed.
âYou think this is convenience for me?â
You hesitated. That hesitation gutted him.
He turned away, jaw tight.
âYou have no idea how deeply Im in this.â
You almost reached for him.
Almost. Instead you left.
Three days passed without seeing him. They were the longest three days of your life.
On the fourth night, someone knocked.
You opened the door. Hyunjin looked wrecked. Hair messy. Eyes tired.
âI cant do this,â he said immediately.
âDo what?â
âLife without you in it.â
He stepped inside.
âI dont care about the arrangement anymore. I care about you. Stay because you want me. Not because you need help.â
Your voice trembled.
âI do want you.â
He closed the distance and kissed you like hed been starving.
His hands slid into your hair, down your back, pulling you flush against him.
âI missed you,â he breathed against your lips.
That night wasnt gentle. It was urgent. Emotional. Clothes forgotten on the floor, your name spilling from his mouth like a prayer.
Afterward, he held you so tightly you could barely move. Neither of you slept much.
Two weeks later, he told you to come over.
âNo questions,â he added.
Suspicious, you obeyed. The apartment smelled faintly like something new.
You stepped inside. A tiny gray kitten waddled toward you.
You froze.
Hyunjin hovered nearby, suddenly nervous.
âYou said once that you always wanted one but your apartment didnt allow pets.â
Your hands shook as you scooped the kitten up.
It immediately curled into your chest.
âI thought,â he continued quietly, âif you moved in⊠you wouldnt have that problem anymore.â
Your head snapped up.
âMove in with me.â
Your heart pounded so loudly you were sure he could hear it.
âNot as an arrangement. Not as anything transactional. Just⊠live with me. Love me. Build something with me.â
Tears spilled freely now.
âYoure serious?â
âIve never been more serious about anything.â
You crossed the room and threw your arms around him.
He let out a shaky laugh, burying his face in your neck.
âIs that a yes?â
âYes,â you whispered.
The kitten meowed between you.
Hyunjin smiled against your skin.
âGood. Hes ours then.â
âOurs?â
âOurs,â he repeated softly.
That night you fell asleep in his bed, kitten tucked between your bodies, his arm heavy over your waist.
No contracts.
No fear.
Just warmth.
Just love that started in an unexpected place and fought its way into something real.
