Posted @withrepost • @franslanting Photos by @FransLanting and friends, Eight conservationists in Iran have been in prison now for 18 months, wrongfully accused of using wildlife camera traps for espionage. I worked with them in Iran on assignment for @NatGeo, and with their help I was able to make this portrait of the highly endangered Asiatic cheetah, which occurs only in Iran. Fewer than 50 remain. These scientists are not spies. They are patriots dedicated to saving from extinction one of the most powerful symbols of Iran’s rich natural heritage. Many conservationists around the world and many other people inside Iran have spoken up for these scientists, but they remain in Tehran’s Evin prison without conviction and have spent months in solitary confinement. In protest, two of them, both women—Niloufar Bayani and Sepideh Kashani (shown after the cheetah photo)—started a hunger strike in prison on August 3. Tomorrow, Friday August 9, @ChristineEckstrom and I will join their hunger strike for 24 hours, to show solidarity and draw attention to their plight. Please consider joining us for a day or even just skipping a meal, and posting or tweeting about it. You can sign a petition at the Scholars at Risk Network to show support for Niloufar. "True Fasting"
1 “Shout with the voice of a trumpet blast.
Shout aloud! Don’t be timid.
Tell my people Israel[a] of their sins!
2 Yet they act so pious!
They come to the Temple every day
and seem delighted to learn all about me.
They act like a righteous nation
that would never abandon the laws of its God.
They ask me to take action on their behalf,
pretending they want to be near me.
3 ‘We have fasted before you!’ they say.
‘Why aren’t you impressed?
We have been very hard on ourselves,
and you don’t even notice it!’
“I will tell you why!” I respond.
“It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves.
Even while you fast,
you keep oppressing your workers.
4 What good is fasting
when you keep on fighting and quarreling?
This kind of fasting
will never get you anywhere with me.
5 You humble yourselves
by going through the motions of penance,
bowing your heads
like reeds bending in the wind.
You dress in burlap
and cover yourselves with ashes.
Is this what you call fasting?
Do you really think this will please the Lord?
6 “No, this is the kind of fasting I want:
Free those who are wrongly imprisoned;
lighten the burden of those who work for you.
Let the oppressed go free,
and remove the chains that bind people.
7 Share your food with the hungry,
and give shelter to the homeless.
Give clothes to those who need them,
and do not hide from relatives who need your help.
8 “Then your salvation will come like the dawn,
and your wounds will quickly heal.
Your godliness will lead you forward,
and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.
9 Then when you call, the Lord will answer.
‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.
“Remove the heavy yoke of oppression.
Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors!
10 Feed the hungry,
and help those in trouble.
Then your light will shine out from the darkness,
and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.
11 The Lord will guide you continually,
giving you water when you are dry
and restoring your strength.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like an ever-flowing spring.
12 Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities.
Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls
and a restorer of homes.
13 “Keep the Sabbath day holy.
Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,
but enjoy the Sabbath
and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day.
Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day,
and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.
14 Then the Lord will be your delight.
I will give you great honor
and satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob.
I, the Lord, have spoken!”
Back at it again

Prisoner Strike Crackdown
As my previous post detailed, many Palestinian prisoners (over 1,100) have started a collective hunger strike against Israeli prisons, saying that the prison conditions for the prisoners are absolutely terrible. This strike by the Palestinians is in an effort to hopefully improve those conditions.
As my last post was on Monday, the same day, the Palestine Committee of Prisoner Affairs released a statement saying Israeli prisons have started a crackdown on these hunger strikes. This crackdown includes separating the prisoners, removing clothing, disallowing personal items, and placing the leaders of the movement in solitary confinement, according to this Al Jazeera article. Many leaders have been relocated to different prisons, and some are going to be charged in disciplinary courts, calling this strike insubordinate.
As this strike continues, there are many questions that can be asked of both sides. Palestinian leaders are saying that this is the most peaceful form of protest, for it only causes harm to the individual who is participating. Yet, Israeli leaders of the prison system are calling for an end to the nonsense, and that measures will be taken to ensure that this prison strike will be quelled and stopped.
As an outsider looking at this situation, Israel’s response surprises me. Why does it matter if Palestinian prisoners hunger strike? If it is truly a peaceful and solely individualized protest, how does this strike harm the Israelis? As we know, these prisons aren’t concerned with the opinions of the prisoners, so why does it matter if they go on a hunger strike? Then again, I am an outsider, so I won’t pretend to know the answer.
