Pro-Millennial
A few days ago I read an article questioning why so much attention is being paid to the newcomers of the workforce - Millennials. Initially I found myself nodding in confirmation to each point until I realized I was once a novice labeled way back when as a Gen X'er, and to be singled out did not feel good. To be frank, I reflected back on how the intimidation of older, more experienced co-workers added to the daily stress of my work day. The result was I asked fewer questions and there was less interaction on my part. So there are a few things we should rethink here.
Mainly, whether itās their ongoing gripe regarding student loan debt, over the top requests for flex-time, or the assumption their spastic and lazy, etc., millennials are a part of the work force and they are here to stay. Anyone ever heard of the terms āconstructive dischargeā,Ā āhidden biasā, or maybe that federally backed agency called the EEOC? Now youāre catching on.. Once youāve started down that dark path itās kind of hard to see your way through.
Inclusion and diversity are vital to our work environments. Millennials bring a ton of great energy and new skill sets meant to enhance not take over. Further, their addition offers an opportunity for employers to move out of assimilation and highlight individual authenticity. This article even has some great tips on how to get them in the door by speaking their language: How to Recruit Millennials.
When we build our diversity efforts we acknowledge that bias, assumptions, and labels are all toxic and unproductive. The goal should always be to engage and retain every employee based upon sound logic, relational network analysis, and well defined problem solving. Or, you can simply choose to be that person who always picks on the new guy!
