"The death of human empathy is one of the earliest and most telling signs of a culture about to fall into barbarism."
- Hannah Arendt.
I don't see it a lot but I want to see an alien reacting to human empathy at its most obvious. Like, I want to see the thought process of a being, who's only ever heard about the concept, watching it in real time.
I want to see a man hugging a stuffed bear on the anniversary of the worst day of his life, quietly sobbing on his own. The alien may have been hanging back to think of a way to possibly comfort the human but how could they when they have no reference for the amount of pain he's going through.
Then another human walks in, one the alien knows has no children, who has never been a fan of children and had barely interacted with this man's child outside of usual meet ups with friends and family. This person who has never felt the pain of losing a child sits down next to the man and says nothing, simply laying a hand on the man's shoulder.
The alien watches in silence as the man turns to the new human, clinging to their embrace like the artificial gravity was swept away from him and the alien sees it, silent tears in the new human's eyes as they hug their friend.
Maybe the alien can sense the emotional states of both and feel the genuine mourning the other human has for a being they barely interacted with. They can feel some of the grief leave the first man as if that emotional pain was taken directly by the second human, like they were able to share the emotional load.
I rarely talk about politics, activism, and my own feelings on these topics. However, this video is the closest you’re going to come to hitting the nail on the head and understanding just where the world is heading, or needs to be going. I’m ashamed to live in America where this reality is disregarded and ignored. I want to take part in the digital revolution. This isn’t only millennials. This is generation Z too. This is everyone leaving a digital footprint. ALL of my followers and friends need to watch this, and then we need to come up with a plan. No one will be left behind in this change. No one can afford to be put below anyone else. As the documentary states, in the third industrial revolution, power is no longer a pyramid. Power is linear in the sharing economy, and every one of us needs to contribute in some way— whether it be service or empathy. And I know every single one of us is capable. I’ve seen it. BLM. Occupy. Parkland. Sandy Hook. EVERYONE is making a stand. The digital age is so damned important and this revolution needs to happen to not only save the species, but to move forward as a “internet family.” Please watch this. Please. Just try. I know it’s long. But please. Watch at least some of it.

But they never approached me, so what can I say? It's their loss. They're wedded to their machines. They're all paid so much to manipulate their technology, they forget there's such a thing as a human angle on these stories.
“Mistress of Many Moons” from Ten Women Who Shook the World by Sylvia Brownrigg
To a degree, are we all sociopaths?
To a degree, are we all sociopaths?
This is not a trick question, but a sincere concern I have had recently. In a college Humanities class of 1977, I remember a discussion on how humans could digress into apathetic invalids. We sometimes simply don’t care about anything or anybody. I have previously written about one of my teenager experiences where I refused to help an elderly lady off of the ground at the fair after some…

We must not Stand Silently
Sometimes a seemingly insignificant event in one’s life may later turn out to change that person forever. That person was me. When I was a teenager I took my girlfriend to the fair with friends. An elderly lady was caught in a bustling strip of rides and fairgoers and was knocked down by some running youngsters. I remember her ambling up on her knees and dusting off her dress as she looked…
