I know this is kinda cheesy (what we Marines would call ‘motard’) but 19 years later (and 50 additional lbs.) I still carry this card in my wallet and read it from time to time. And sometimes I read it and get convicted; I couldn’t honor my commitment to the Corps and got discharged for failure to complete alcohol rehabilitation. It’s a shame and guilt that I still carry today along with the card. But then I also think: I helped start SEVEN drug and alcohol rehabilitation treatment centers and I even owned and operated one myself for a couple of years. I see successful patients of mine to this day living happy, drug/alcohol free lives and I think, “I got revenge, I think I’ve redeemed myself. Hopefully I’ve paid my debt to the Corps.” So even though I’m no longer a man in uniform—someone who should keep their private life unsullied as an example to all, honest in thought and deed in both personal and official life—I still wear one on the inside. I still fall and fail from time to time but I remind myself of these core values and use them as the backbone of my life and not as a punchline (Col. Jessup would be proud, lol). I’ll end my soapbox sermon by reading what’s on the back of this card: Marines… 1. Obey the law 2. Lead by example 3. Respect themselves and others 4. Maintain a high standard of integrity 5. Support and defend the constitution 6. Uphold special trust and confidence 7. Place faith and honor above all else 8.
