Sony brings the Holodesk to life
The Holodeck is real and there's no Lt. Barclay to make things awkward. Using a combination of a Steadicam, multiple EyeToy cameras, PlayStation Move controllers, projection mapping, motion tracking, spandex-clad actors and giant rubber sea monster tentacles, Sony Europe, Studio Output and Marshmallow Laser Feast shot three web videos to highlight the immersiveness of movies rented or purchased from the PlayStation Store. Impressively, the shots rely exclusively on visual tricks, with zero editing or postproduction work. Is this the future? A research project at Microsoft Research Cambridge has brought forth a prototype called Holodesk, which lets you manipulate virtual objects with your hand. You literally "get your hands on" the virtual display. According to the official description from its creators, there is at work a "novel real-time algorithm for representing hands and other physical objects" allowing physically realistic interaction between real and virtual 3-D objects.

Microsoft Research nous offre une petite merveille: l'Holodesk.
Pour la faire simple, c'est pouvoir manipuler un hologramme comme dans les films de science fiction.
Il faut pour cela un écran transparent, le Kinect de Microsoft et une webcam. Ensuite vos mains feront des merveilles et vous pourrez vous la jouer homme/femme (rayez la mention inutile) du futur !
Il suffira de mettre vos mains sous l'écran transparent et à vous la manipulation holographique.
Autant je trouve que Kinect pour les jeux, c'est pourri, que pour l'utiliser sur des inventions de ce type, c'est géant.

Article about the new Kinect experiment from Microsoft. Personally speaking I think that this is an amazing experiment showing the use of their controller in a way that might closen the gap between the 'real' and virtual world.
Check out the movie in the article, at the end they demonstrate some use cases which (IMHO) are pretty wicked!
