Might as well pick back up where I left off. Gave the new shoes* a spin on the old treadmill. Also tried out a different style of running, because why not**? Took it slow just to make sure I wasn’t overextending after my ultra Ragnar weekend.
Didn’t remember until I started writing this post in the evening that I had fully intended on attacking the stairmill with a vengeance for the couple of weeks between the ultra Ragnar and the Mohican Trail Marathon in a couple of weeks. But to be honest, I feel like I got some decent incline work during the Ragnar - I made sure that even while I was taking walk breaks I was sure to run up the entirety of all the inclines.

* Did I mention? After I got back home on Sunday and got some of my stuff unpacked, showered, and some laundry started, my wife wanted to go to the shoe store to find her next pair of shoes (recall she’s running the Chicago marathon this year). I figured since I was tagging along anyhow I might as well see if they had anything that felt better than the Altras. Because while those feel ... OK ... I don’t think they feel great. So I tried on some Hoka Bindis and immediately fell in love. They didn’t feel too narrow as nearly all other Hokas have in the past. Ran a bit on their treadmill. Tried a few other models/sizes but the Bindis were the winner.
“So... do you have Hoka’s trail shoe? The Speed Goat? in my size?” They also felt pretty good but not as nice as the Bindis. I still went home with them both. I wore the Speed Goats to work today to start getting them broken in, and the Bindis were fine enough for 5k.
** At one point the salesperson said “I watched you running, you’re pretty much on the balls of your feet. You could maybe try more of a midfoot strike?” And honestly, I’d been mulling the idea around in the back of my brain for a while now. “I know, it’s easier said than done...” “Yeah, but you’re not telling me anything I haven’t already been thinking!”. I tried conscientiously landing more on my midfoot for my next couple of test runs (where I also ruled out a larger size nearly immediately since the top of the shoe was creasing uncomfortably on the top of my foot). Not too bad! Thus my attempt to run 5k that way. I think I was mostly successful, and managed to run fairly pain free except for the new pain which is probably nothing and after I pushed through a bit seemed to pretty much go away. More or less. So there’s that.
Tons of Hokas by Michael Whelan...
The large Hoka drawing was one of the real surprises I dug up in my time in the studio. Michael talked about his Hoka obsession—err, I mean collaboration—with David Wenzel in The Art of Michael Whelan, and here we see an actual example of it.
Of course, I also found various Hoka studies around the house. Please forgive amateur photography. Many of these were taken in tight quarters and odd angles. I should have just pulled the frames down and shot them more deliberately...but y'know, kid in a candy store. There was a lot to take in and a lot of other "work" to do.
17 years ago I signed up for this marathon. I had to mail in my race registration. And then I'd wait for my packet to come in the mail. I selected a large race shirt for myself. By the time I got that packet I was trying to get pregnant with the Little Athlete. I in fact became pregnant that month. I've always joked, "wanna get pregnant? train for a marathon." I've seen it so many times before. I didn't register for another marathon until 2012. Looking back, I never envisioned saying, "I've been a runner my entire life." I've never disliked running. As a child I searched for the shoes that would make me fast. I ran around the block with the neighbor's housekeeper who graciously let a child tag along. My father took me to the track for fun. I never ran in school. I was never fast. I simply just loved to run. My new Hokas came in today and I opened the box and it was like I could see the future. Long roads, the light filtered through the trees, the sound of my feet on the pavement, the rhythm of my breath. My love sat there contained in a box. I get to run again. What a gift. I get to run.
