In the years following the Civil War, a system of transcontinental railways exploded across the United States, connecting eastern terminals to the remote rails of the west. This expansion and the speed at which one could now travel was accompanied by a curious widespread phenomenon, producing a figure mythologized in American folklore: the wandering tramp.
When your credit card is declined, you improvise :)

#TBT Grandfather's oil derrick and chair built in medicine bottles. The derrick bottle is about 6" tall, and the chair, with ribbon ties, is about 3.5" tall with "DERWILLOW" stamped on the outside of the glass. Each have a locked hand carved stopper. They were not built like a ship in a bottle, but were hand assembled from the outside. My grandfather, Thomas Allen Jackson was born in #1897 in #Arkansas and died in #ElPaso in #1970. He rode the rails while a teen and at 19, returned home when called up for the second draft of #WWI. The #armistice was signed just when he completed basic training. He is buried at #FortBlissNationalCemetery. With a third grade education, wanderlust set in at some point and he traveled west. My father said subsistence farming was not for Thomas. After marrying my grandmother Ruby, they moved to #Oklahoma where my dad (b. 1925) and uncle (b. 1927) were born. Fortunately for them, they were already settled in El Paso when #BlackMonday hit in #1929. Grandfather owned and operated several businesses in El Paso and eventually retired to run a motel on #Alameda near #FoxPlaza. #family #elpaso #texas #outsiderart #hoboing #boxcars #trampartist #ridingtherails (at Foxes Arroyo - Upper Chaparral)
