It was an incredible honor to portray playwright, historian and revolutionary woman Mercy Otis Warren at @revspaces’ 249th #BostonTeaParty anniversary reenactment last night. For her elite station in life, Mercy and her family held some extremely progressive ideals, including being anti slavery, pro women’s education, and acknowledging the injustice done to Indigenous people. Her play “The Adulateur” had half of Boston calling Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson “Rapatio”, since that was the name she gave her thinly-veiled satirization of him. Thanks to @newenglandmom for pulling off a fantastic interpretive event in Newport today! The @newporthistory put together a reenactment of Rochambeau’s reception in Newport in the wake of the arrival of the French army. I portrayed Hannah Wanton, a Quaker daughter of a politically powerful and frequently Loyalist-leaning family, all new points of view for me to portray. It’s extremely rewarding to acquaint visitors with the realities and nuances of people’s lives at different times, and remind them that just as now, matters are rarely black and white. Case in point - Hannah’s/my gown. You may think of Quakers as plain dressers that favored neutral colors, if you know about their clothing at all. But those conventions weren’t held to quite as strictly in Rhode Island than Pennsylvania, and standards of dress became firmer in the following century. Hannah, being young and wealthy, could have probably gotten away with a blue gown, simple and unadorned as it is. I was so in love with interpreting the wife of such a radical as Dr. Thomas Young and who’d had a fairly unique background - German refugee family, growing up alongside the Haudenosaunee, marrying a doctor who was also a radical and a Deist - because it lets me speak with a perspective not frequently found in historical interpretation. @redthreaded #fallforcostume challenge day 22: Past. There were many directions I could have gone with a theme like “past”, but I decided to limit it to sharing pictures from my first foray into historical interpretation with “Cry Innocent: the People vs. Bridget Bishop” in Salem, MA. It was the first time I got to wear 17th century clothing and I fell in love with a few of the pieces - magic bodices and petticoat sets that looked good on pretty much the whole cast. I also learned I got hit on or flirted with more than ever before when I had a coif, or cap, on! I clearly felt these clothes suited me, hence all the mirror selfies from pre-smartphone times. #fallforcostume Day 3: Naturalism. When I think of naturalism in the context of historical interpretation and/or costuming, I think of a few things: how at the @oldstatehouseboston in 2017 I was taught how to speak, stand, walk, and write in 1760s style. We also learned a little about cooking and sewing, and even had a 1760s dinner party with lots of Madeira! Because cosmetics are a legit part of costuming, I mostly think of how I felt fortunate that the women I portray, all of the “middling sort,” may have used a hint of cosmetics to achieve just the natural sort of look I like to wear daily. I love a rosy lip stain, a dusting of powder, light blush, and mascara (which I know isn’t HA but I try to use a light hand), and my brows are already bold in 1770s fashion as is! I’m also very passionate about only buying cruelty free, and woman-owned whenever possible. My favorite products to get this look are: First image: this was in 2017 but I know I was wearing @iliabeauty Lip Conditioner in Arabian Knights with @w3llpeople baked foundation and @iliabeauty limitless lash mascara. Second image: exact same stuff in 2019, with @hanskincarecosmetics blush in Baby Pink.
