For today's #FragmentFriday, a large historiated initial, possibly Spanish, cut from an antiphonary page. The initial shows Mary holding Jesus and giving a rosary to a saint, presumably Saint Dominic. The other side is a fragment of musical notation. The parent manuscript must have been quite large, used by a community rather than an individual. (Manuscript Fragment Collection, Ms. Coll. 591, Folder 15)

hello fellow illuminated mediaeval manuscript peeps - does anyone remember the german (? pretty sure) mediaeval manual that was like an example book for scribes/illustrators to copy standardised ornamentals for manuscripts out of? its so bugging me that i cant remember how to find it again

This dragon seems ready to bite a piece off of the letter Q.
It’s all about dragons and unicorns at the Riesenfeld Center this week, simply because this book of Canon law features so many.
Woodcut Wednesday: Watch it with that!
What would this winged fellow need with a knife? We must assume he used it in the construction of the big letter L.

These unique initials are among the finest found in our collection. Rather than being printed from woodblocks, these specimens were engraved on a metal plate. While this process is more laborious, the results are far superior, with crisp, deep detail.

Today's #YearOfHours is Free Library of Philadelphia Lewis E 120, book of hours, use of Rome. It contains many historiated initials and decorated borders, and is written in a textualis quadrata Gothic script. Written in Naples, Italy, ca. 1490.
