How Did I Come Across This Book?:
The Book was gifted to me on my birthday. Never heard of the book or the author before - Went in absolutely blind.
Man-oh-man, this book was dense and I felt like I was in a college lecture hall for many chapters of this book. Is that bad? Good? I guess it all depends - at points the "lectures" were droll and at other points engaging, riveting. I definitely learned things I never even contemplated.
For the "non-lectured" portions of the book it was high flying action - a punch to the mouth in a good way. The opening of the book when our protagonist is talking about delivering pizzas was a beautifully written masterpiece.
And for my moment of honesty - I didn't even fathom that this book was written in the early 90's - silly me thought this was a modern/recent book ripping on sci-fi and cyberpunk tropes of the past - when actually it was building, expanding, and inventing new tropes of the genre. Even when passages mentioned dates/years/events (WWII, 70s, 80s) I didn't fully gather that the the story/setting was taking place in a dystopian 1990s - whoosh - right over my head. I thought this book was spoofing cyberpunk books of the past - a satire - which kind of made it a fun journey. Neal Stephenson was ahead of the curve blending that "nerd" terminology and comedy (I hope he was aiming for laughs) back in '92.
Looking at the book as whole and at the period that it was written - the style that it was written - this is good piece of work - BUT - I understand this book is not for everyone - there are some slow burns.
