Fun fact about me: I LOVE HIPPOS! They’re my favorite animal and I collect little hippos, so when I found these small, blue hippo sculptures I was SO excited! When I went to he British Museum, they actually had one of these sculptures, but I didn’t realize until I was in the gift shop, so when I found out that the Louvre had some too I knew that I had to go find them! Not only did I find the one small hippo on his own, I found a whole row of them when I went back a second time! These are small Egyptian sculptures that were placed in the tombs of high-ranking officials around the end of the Middle Kingdom, which stretched from 2050 BC to 1710 BC. While we don’t delve into much Egyptian history, we do touch on them, for it’s nearly impossible to talk about our western history without including some interaction with Egypt. They are one of the longest, if not the longest stretching civilizations that we talk about, and their influence is still felt in various aspects of our society. These hippos in particular show that the ancient Egyptians cared about the afterlife and also had time to creat beautiful art. These hippos are adorable, and I’m sure that the Egyptians could see that as well!
