dexter morgan
→ Dexter is autistic. He doesn't know he is autistic, so he attributes all of the traits that one would read as autistic as proof that he is somewhere between a psychopath and a sociopath. I am not sure if someone sat him down and made him go through an autism assessment if he'd even believe the results, let alone if they would even come out accurate due to how he views himself. This makes writing him a fun challenge of how can I show this without coming off ableist as the writer and making sure it comes off as internalized ableism? Writing Dexter is a delicate tightrope walk. His special interests are all tied to murder. Not all autistic people are like this! He's very unique.
→ Dexter lives somewhere on the ace spectrum. I am not sure he even knows where his sexuality falls. I personally think he's an honest case of being demisexual where his attraction to a person grows along with how much he comes to feel about them. He isn't immediately attracted to anyone and only develops a sexual drive once he's fallen in love with that person. He will claim he is incapable of love, but the fact his drives and desires change based on the intensity of his feelings tells a different story.
→ Dexter is an unreliable narrator because he thinks he knows himself, but often what he knows of himself is things he was told were facts about himself that he kept repeating over and over until he believed it.
→ Dexter wants very badly to be someone's attack dog on a leash. He needs to kill and wants to kill bad guys, but he relishes being protective and useful and being given permission to kill someone for someone else. He needs someone to tell him he did a good job.
