#Hike13 was split up between the Ice Caves and the Bandera Volcano Crater and the El Calderon Loop Trail in El Malpais National Monument. Saturday's hike with Mandy and Matt was one for the books! We hiked a little over 5 miles down into a valley. The trail ran alongside a creek. We enjoyed beautiful pine scents while listening to the creek flow. There were over half a dozen creek crossings, with either bridges or stepping stones. We also enjoyed climbing around on some huge boulders. There was a 1000 ft elevation gain to get back out of the valley. At the end of the hike, a thunderstorm rolled through. And of course, as soon as we got out of tree cover it started to rain and hail on us! Soaking wet and covered with little bits of ice, we rain back to the car. But of course, had to stop to get a picture with the crazy weather...because why not? We have already soaked anyway!🤣😂 As you can see from the picture.
