How do I ask for a raise when I KNOW that my counterpart earns much more than me but officially I am not allowed to know that because weâre not supposed to talk about salaries, so I canât use that as my argument? I think I do okay work but I donât work insanely well or anything.
You only bring it up as a last resort.
Any raise request should be based on YOU and YOUR performance. If you think you do "okay work," then you need to frame your "okay" accomplishments as "pretty damn swell" instead!
As irrational as it sounds, your employer isn't going to take kindly to a request for a raise based on "But it's not fair that you pay them more!" Which is why you focus on yourself first, and only use it as the nuclear option if they turn you down. And if they get even more pissed and claim you're "not supposed to talk about salaries," you can gently remind them that it's illegal for them to forbid coworkers from disclosing salaries.
But again, start the case with you and your own work. That's the best route to success, as we've written in our guides to asking for raises:

The Portland Teachers are on strike and it's bringing out a lot of shitty opinions from people.
Case in point, teachers should be paid the same as doctors. For elementary schools, they are like daycare workers with extra steps that they often don't get compensated for.
In middle school, they have to deal with behaviors they are never trained on.
And for high school, they deal with middle school problems, plus the egos, potential violence, harder curriculum, keeping kids engaged, helping kids plan for their future (which parents often don't do), teaching about sexual and hygiene health (which parents also don't do).
They deal with a lot of shit. And they go into it because they care, but that doesn't mean they should be taken advantage of. Pay them accordingly.

Climate change is a imminent threat to use all; that we have known about since the 1960s.
Most all young people of every generation, the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, had very progressive views about climate change and wanted systemic change for the better; but they have had time to fall into the rhythm of life.
My generation is very liberal because we donât have time to fall into the rhythm of life on Earth.
By which I mean: getting married, having babies, and paying bills. But I also mean the daily routine of eating and sleeping and just being human.
My generation doesnât have time to grow complacent with the status quo. The world is literally getting too hot for life. We are out of time.
We are fighting with everything we have to make sure that we do have time to live and love. But if we donât, we want every precious human life to be treated with fairness and dignity. Because human life has value.
Life has value.
No matter the color of your skin, your religion, or your beliefs. You are deserving of life. And things that infringe the right to a happy life; rasism, sexism, global warming, have got to go.
