Second #OpenHouseMelbourne visit on the way home: #ClarendonTerrace, 1856-57, designed by Osgood Pritchard as 3 houses disguised as a small palace. Its proposed demolition in 1977 prompted a public outcry: the state government granted money for the #NationalTrust to buy it; in turn they leased it in 1980 to the Robert Menzies Foundation conditional on restoration/repurposing. When I last visited the Foundation was still there & inside was a sad 80s office; now it’s a new women’s museum #HerPlace and the bones of the building are visible. Few exhibits but Gwen Watson’s ceramics are interesting. And the beautiful house next door is finally being worked on after decades of neglect!
