Dandelion
These flowers are often regarded as weeds, yet children see them as beautiful flowers fit to pick and bring home to mum. Reluctantly, she puts the dandelion in a cup or a small vase to make the child happy. What she doesn’t know, as she looks at what she thinks is just a nasty weed, is that her child has brought her the ultimate gift that mother nature has blessed us with- other than weed of course *insert chuckle here*.
Dandelion greens are loaded with vitamins A, C, K, and E, as well as folate and vitamin B. They are an excellent source of iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Filled with potent antioxidants that neutralize or prevent negative effects of free radicals on the body. Dandelion leaf extract has actually been found to dramatically reduce masses of cancerous cells when applied or injected to the site.
While dandelion leaves and flowers are amazing in their own right, the true magic is in the root. Dandelion root is rich with carbohydrate insulin, a soluble fibre found in plants that support the growth and maintenance of healthy bacterial flora in the intestinal tract. This fibre also helps reduce blood sugar levels, as well as cholesterol. The high levels of potassium found in the root help lower blood sugar. The root also acts as a diuretic, detoxifying the liver and cleanse the body.
FOR THE SUFFERING HERE:
Dandelion supports weight-loss and maintenance. Now, you may be thinking, “pfft, yeah right” but hear me out here. Chlorogenic Acid (found in dandelions), reduces overall body weight and levels of some fat-storage hormones. When used for a short period of time (like, 2mon on a ½ tsp tincture 2x per day, and then one month off of it), it provides a consistent source of prebiotic fibre which increases intestinal movement, and it lowers your body’s ability to some degree to store fat by stopping hormone secretion (I am in the process of making a tincture and will be trying it out for myself soon so I will add to this later)
The MAIN HEALTH BENEFIT that is being scientifically studied as we speak is its cancer fighting abilities. As stated earlier, the dandelion leaf extract can reduce mass of cancerous cells, but the root extract has the capacity to drastically slow the growth of cancerous cells in liver, colon, and pancreatic tissue.
Go pick some dandelions, harvest some roots, and make a wonderful dandelion salad before the uninformed spray them with chemicals! 😊
