Birth of Henry Percy, 3rd Earl of Northumberland
On July 25, 1421, Henry Percy was born into one of England’s most powerful noble families. As the son of Henry Percy, 2nd Earl of Northumberland, he inherited the leadership of the influential Percy family, whose lands and military strength made them major players in northern England.
Henry Percy became the 3rd Earl of Northumberland in 1455, during the turbulent years that led into the Wars of the Roses. Like many nobles of his time, he was caught between loyalty to the Crown, family interests, and the growing conflict between the Houses of Lancaster and York.
The Percy family played a crucial role in the politics and battles of 15th-century England. Henry supported the Lancastrian cause during the early stages of the Wars of the Roses and continued the long Percy tradition of military service and influence on the northern frontier.
