Henry Percy “Harry Hotspur” Falls at the Battle of Shrewsbury
On July 21, 1403, Henry Percy, one of England’s most famous medieval warriors, fell in battle during the Battle of Shrewsbury. Known as “Harry Hotspur” for his courage, speed, and fierce military reputation, Percy led a major rebellion against King Henry IV of England alongside other dissatisfied nobles.
The battle was fought in Shropshire as royal forces clashed with the rebel army. Percy was a skilled commander who inspired his troops, but the fighting ended in defeat for the rebels. During the struggle, he was killed, reportedly struck in the face by an arrow while leading his men from the front.
Henry Percy’s death marked the end of one of the greatest military figures of his generation and weakened the rebellion against Henry IV. His bravery and dramatic downfall later helped make him a legendary figure in English history, famously appearing as “Hotspur” in the works of William Shakespeare.
