Prompt: Contract Lawyer, with Carina being the scary one.

Kay was pinned by the throat when Carina stepped into his office, her hands full of takeout.

The sight of her boyfriend, bloodied and defiant, and cornered by what was clearly another demon, brought her up short.

“You’re going to turn over your Contracts to me,” the demon hissed, a monstrosity of flesh, held together by red light that glowed between gaping chunks like still-hot lava between stones. Kay struggled, but the fight was clearly lost. “You’re good, but not this good. What’s your secret, eh? Tell me and I’ll eat you quick.”

She wanted to scream, or cry. She wanted to turn and run. She wanted to find some way to save her demon form what was clearly an enemy he couldn’t take in a fight.

When she opened her mouth, what came out was law.

“According to page nine, section three, paragraph seventeen,” Carina said, and set her takeout aside with hands that were oddly still. “My Contract is with the demon, known hereafter as ‘Kay’ exclusively, and cannot be turned over, claimed, or otherwise surrendered to another entity including but not limited to humans, angels, demons, without permission from both signees and a full renegotiation of terms. Should this clause be violated under any circumstances, the Contract Holder will immediately pay out the full terms of the Contract to the Contractee. Upon payment delivery, the terms of which are detailed on page forty-six through fifty-seven, the Contract is furthermore null and void.”

“Did I mention that my primary Contract is with a finance lawyer?” Kay rasped when the new demon, taken by surprise, dropped him to stare at her. “Carina, this is Maseroath. He wants to take over my position, and plans to kill me. We serve the same Lord.”

Carina nodded once, ignored her pounding heart, and took a seat on the couch. It was time to negotiate like she never had before.
