For the Sake of Science: A Harrisco New Yearâs Kiss
This is my contribution to @heckyeahharrisco âs Harrisco New Yearâs Kisses: An Anthology. I hope yâall enjoy it. Iâll posty it up on Ao3, too. Squeeee! -QuietDarkness
* * * * * *
There was a sound.
It sounded like a rodent, or a dog toy. High pitched and quick and echoing around the speed lab every half minute or so. It was irritating as hell and had Harry's jaw clenching every damn time because with everyone off doing this Earthâs version of celebrating the New Year, he had things to do like calibrating the sensors, and he couldn't concentrate with that damn incessant sound bouncing off-
There it was again.
Only this time, a strangled and clearly frustrated yell followed it as Cisco pushed his way out from under the console he'd been fixing and stood up, one hand in a fist around the screwdriver he'd been using, the other rubbing at his sternum as... again with the sound.
Except this time, Harry knew what was doing it. Or more like who.
"Did you just... squeak?" He asked, reaching up and pulling his glasses off with a raised brow. Cisco dropped his hand, turning a remarkably stone-cold glare at Harry.
"I did not squeak, Harry. I have the hiccups."
Squeak.
âSon of a breach!â Cisco swore, moving quickly to the tool box and nearly slamming the screwdriver back into. Squeak. Harry chuckled. Which drew Ciscoâs instant glare, hands moving to his hips as he stood there red-faced and agitated. âItâs not funny, Harry. I canât w-hicâŚâ He took a deep breath, closing his eyes a moment. âCanât. Work. Like. This.â He enunciated each word before reopening them.
âWhat are you even do-â Squeakus interruptus. âDoing here anyway?â He pushed up from his stool, rounding the console heâd been sitting at, stopping before the shorter man who was quietly âsqueak- or not so quietly seething. âShouldnât you be off with everyone else, ringing in the New Year?â He motioned to the clock on the far side of the wall.Â
Five minutes to midnight.Â
Harry wasnât much for celebrating. Theyâd already done the Christmas parties, and heâd been dragged to those against his will. Well, for the most part. He couldnât quite say no to Cisco when he was wearing one of his severely bright, overly cheery and decidedly ugly Christmas sweaters. He could, however, avoid New Year celebrations much easier. Because he didnât do clubs. He didnât really drink, unless it was to relax. And the sort of partying that went with these things didnât exactly appeal to a man like him.
The fact Cisco stuck around this year was confusing, yes. It wasnât that Harry didnât enjoy the company. Honestly, Ciscoâs company was favorable, to nearly everyone else in existence. And that was maybe an understatement. But he could have been doing so many better things with his time than sitting in a lab with Harry.
The squeaky toy of a human being crossed his arms over his chest with an exaggerated sigh.
âI hic didnât feel like it hic this yearhic, frackenhell!â He stomped his foot. Literally. Like a toddler having a temper tantrum. âHarry, I will literhically pay you to makehic them stop.â He whined. Harry raised both brows, a wry smile spreading on his lips that Cisco only frowned at.
âMm, I donât know, I think youâre rather cute when youâre squeaky.â He reached up and booped Cisco on the nose. Instantly, the shorter manâs eyes widened and he dropped his arms and his jaw at the same time.
âYou did nothic just do that.â He flatly chastised. âSeriously?!â He lifted a hand and rubbed his nose. âAnd I amhic not cute. Iâm hic a manly man. Men arenât-â It wasnât a hiccup that stopped Ciscoâs words, but some sort of realization that came over his features, filled his eyes, made his body still in between two more hiccups. âYou think Iâm cutehic?â He suddenly demanded, face growing very serious as he took a quick step toward Harry, who just as quickly felt like the conversation had taken a very distinct turn in a completely different direction. Harry raised his brows, watching the way Ciscoâs deliciously dark eyes danced back and forth between his own.
Truthfully, he found Cisco Ramon to be every definition of attractive he could think of. Intellectually, emotionally, physically. Cute was hardly the correct descriptor for the man as a whole. But it fit for certain things. Like when Cisco would stick the tip of his tongue out of the corner of his mouth when he was concentrating, or when he would bop in place to music playing through his earbuds, or when he got frustrated enough that the bridge of his nose scrunched, or when he was having hiccups that sounded like a squirrel high on caffeine.
But should he really be telling Cisco any of that? None of it was a revelation. Harry had known for months that he was hopelessly in love with Cisco Ramon. But what would the man think if he knew Harry had been quietly pining for him? What if Harry spilled every last bean there was to spill and Cisco didnât reciprocate?
âI thinkâŚâ Harry hesitated, not sure what any admittance would do to their current dynamic. But with Cisco standing this close, smelling like coconut shampoo, looking at him like the answer to the universe rested between his lips, Harry wasnât exactly thinking logically. âI think youâre adorable,â He said softly, reaching up with one hand and gently taking a lock of Ciscoâs hair in between two fingers, âAnd infuriating. And innately attractive. And quite possibly the definition of joy.â Damn, he sounded poetic. Even to himself. Which was saying something. But Cisco wasnât protesting or pulling back as Harry slipped that lock of hair behind Ciscoâs ear. âAnd yes⌠I think youâre cute.â He dropped his hand. âAmong so many other things.â
It wasnât a squeak that interrupted, but a really loud rendition of âCelebrationâ by Kool and the Gang piping through the tiny speaker on Ciscoâs cell phone from the table across the room, making them both momentarily stiffen.
âItâs midnight.â Cisco said, followed by another squeak. But Cisco hadnât taken his eyes off Harry. And somehow, heâd managed to get even closer. Harry blinked at him.
âObviously.â He retorted, about to step back, because his brain suddenly felt muddled and dumb thanks to Ciscoâs proximity. But it was quickly clear that Cisco wasnât about to let him get away. With one more loud squeak, he reached up with both hands and grabbed Harry by the head, rising up and pressing their torsos together before pressing his incredibly soft, plush lips against Harryâs own.
For a so called genius, Harry had no logical idea what to do at first.Â
He froze, so stunned that his brain malfunctioned entirely. It was a good thing his body instinctively knew what to do, because a breath later he was molding both hands around Ciscoâs warm waist, and his eyes were closing, and his lips were moving in time with Ciscoâs. He felt his chest flush with warmth, felt Ciscoâs fingers curl into his already messy hair as their lips parted and Ciscoâs tongue darted out, meeting Harryâs eagerly.Â
He tasted like hot chocolate, and Harry found himself sighing as the kiss took on a distinct life of its own. He didnât count how long it went on for. His mind was blissfully blank except for the sensations that Ciscoâs form and mouth and hands seemed to be drawing out of him. And neither one of them seemed to notice when Ciscoâs phone went quiet on its own.
At some point, they remembered that they needed oxygen and pulled apart. Or they pulled their mouths apart. Their foreheads stayed plastered together, chests heaving, hands holding onto one another for dear life as the sounds of their heavy breaths filled the void in between.
âHappy New Year?â Cisco made it a question, delightfully swollen lips turning into a goofy grin that had Harry chuckling instantly before he kissed Cisco again. Once, twice. Chaste but tender. âWhy didnât you say anything sooner?â Cisco swatted at him lightly, the two men pulling apart just enough to see one another better. Harry gave him a knowing look.
âWhy didnât you?â
âTouche.â Cisco nodded. âHonestly, though?â One of Ciscoâs hands moved to Harryâs bicep, the other moving to Harryâs mouth, warm fingertips tracing his lips like Cisco was fascinated by them, staring at what he was doing with every touch. âI always kinda thought⌠maybe you felt the same as I do. The way you touch me sometimes or Iâd catch you staring. And damn, manâŚâ He smiled sweetly. Definitely sweetly. âYouâre pretty much my favorite person. I didnât want to lose you if I was wrong. So I kept my mouth shut andâŚ. Holy crap.â He said the last words quickly, brows rising as he stilled in Harryâs hold. âI just realized my hiccups are gone.â Harry chuckled instantly. âYou kissed the hiccups out of me.â He grinned, wide and almost lazy. âDid we just invent a cure for hiccups?â
âIf we did, itâs not a revelation I think I would ever share with anyone else.â Harry responded, moving his arms more around Cisco, the shorter man relaxing into him like he belonged there. Perfect fit.
âSecret cure. Got it.â Cisco responded, then craned his neck just enough to capture Harryâs mouth for a second time. This time, the kiss was far less rushed. Definitely more languid, just as delicious.
âHappy New Year, Ramon.â Harry whispered along his mouth. They had a pretty hard time separating after that. In fact, they kissed till kissing turned into something far more productive, like rolling around naked in Harryâs bed. If theyâd stopped long enough, they might have had the wherewithal to see that this was all happening absurdly fast. But if either of them were being completely honest, it was something a long time in the making.
âYou should get the hiccups more often.â Harry mumbled from where he lay on his back, eyes closed, feeling sated and more comfortable than he could ever remember feeling. Cisco chuckled easily, his head barely shifting from where heâd settled right up against Harry, skin to skin.
âYou just want to hear me squeak again.â
âYouâre cute when you squeak.â
âIf you tell anyone about that, I swear Iâll never kiss you again.â Cisco warned, curling his arm completely around Harryâs ribs. He smiled.
âThat would be a shame. How else would you cure your hiccups?â Harry countered. Cisco lifted his head, messy hair falling around his shoulders, dark eyes squinting ruefully at Harry who just kept smiling adoringly at him.
âFine. But Iâm telling everyone I seduced you with my awesomeness.â
âCuteness, actually.â Harry watched Cisco begin to protest, but didnât give him the chance. He sealed their mouths together, content and wondering⌠what if there was a way to cause hiccups? After all, they knew exactly how to cure them now.
Research would have to be done.
For the sake of science.
Yeah.
Sciiiience.

The âNot A Kissâ Kiss. The Flash. Harrisco. Spoilers for 4x09. Ficlet.
Itâs New Yearâs Eve. Early afternoon. Harryâs mood has already reached knifing someone very gently for talking to him. Wisely, he tucks himself away with a bottle of scotch on the sidelines, boots up on the terminal, and lets the day pass.
Caitlin spends the afternoon bent over something in her clinical space while Ralph flirts at her without particularly needing a response. Barry is tucked away in a prison bed, enthusiastically demonstrating his faith in them. Iris has her head in a book across the city, trying to add legal expertise to her expansive resume while every day adds another crack to her shiny perfect love.
Cisco wanders past, pulling Harryâs attention easily from the blurry computer screen. Harryâs body lights up like the bulbs on a Christmas Tree. Blink, blink, blink. Cisco doesnât seem to notice the glare. Harry lets his head roll back against the chair as he follows Cisco with his eyes. Sometimes, Harry just wants to---Harry takes a swig and holds it behind his teeth, hissing.

Journey âRound the Sun
Cisco bounces on the mattress. Itâs so comfy that itâs unbelievable. He may be a little bit in love. âWeâre taking this mattress with us. Help me figure out how to smuggle it out to the car.â
Harry pauses in unbuttoning his shirt, his fingers going still. âNo, Ramon.â
âThink of it as an anniversary present. I could try to vibe it out of the hotel, but itâs kinda big and awkward.â
âIf you want a present, this might be a little more appropriate.â Harry drops something into Ciscoâs palm and closes his fingers around whatever it is. Cisco looks down at his closed hand and then back up at Harry. Harry refuses to meet his eyes. He opens his hand.
âThese are rings.â Theyâre white metal. Light, not heavy, which means titanium. Theyâre plain, simple, just rounded edges with a brushed, not polished, finish. And there are two of them. âAre theseâŚ?â
âOnly if you want them to be.â Harry looks away and scratches at his neck. âI mean, they can be what you want them to be. They donât have to be--â
âGive me your hand.â When Harry hesitates, Cisco makes a grabby motion with his fingers. âCâmon, your hand.â
Cisco barely breathes as he slides one of the rings onto Harryâs finger. This is not what he had been expecting when Harry had sprung dinner and a night in a nice hotel on him. Heâd figured theyâd have a little too much to drink, have some fun trying to ruin the sheets and order room service for breakfast. A very enjoyable celebration of a year of dating. This is so much bigger.
Harry takes the other ring from Ciscoâs palm. He kneels down next to where Cisco sits on the bed. As he slips the ring on to Ciscoâs hand, he can hear Harry murmur, âWith this ringâŚâ
Ciscoâs lips are on his before Harry has a chance to finish.
For @heckyeahharriscoâs Harriscofest. :)Â

Before writing my Harrisco Pacific Rim AU, I wanted an illustration to help visualize the piece for me, one that would capture the first scene I dreamed up for this fic as well as the emotion behind the entire AU. I commissioned the extraordinary @sadfishkidâ for this piece and am happy beyond words with how it turned out.
After completing a degree in mechanical engineering, Cisco is recruited to the Jaeger program as a pilot, his unique skills with mecha and combat making him an ideal candidate. Despite this, he doesnât seem to Drift with any other recruits.
Dr. Harry Wells is a bitter Jaeger veteran who has retired to the K-Science Lab after losing his Drift partner. When the Breach spits out Kaiju larger than ever seen before, he is pulled back into the program and told to find a new partner immediately.
What follows promises to change the course of the War, and their lives, forever.
