I got my student evaluation scores today and I was thinking,Ā āWhat sort of scores would Akari receive? What would his evals say?ā And I think his evaluations were probably pretty split. Heād get ranked extraordinarily high by the smarter of his students, because as you all know, senseiās knowledge is incomparable. Heād also receive high marks from the besotted students who had little crushes on him. But thereād be a contingent of students who would dislike his brash attitude and the fact that he never stops to explain something twice (which is bad pedagogy, letās be real). But he never received middling scores. Either you loved him or you hated him.
And then in the comment boxes, I bet the smarter students would leave great critical feedback talking about what they loved about the class, what they learned, and how impressed they are with senseiās erudition. The besotted students would leave stupid shit about how heās so sexy itās hard to pay attention in lecture. And the students who hated him would (rightfully) criticize his shitty attitude and arrogance.Ā
And then thereās Hirato. I know many of you might imagine that Hirato would probably hit on Akari through the student evals, but I donāt imagine him being so obvious. My guess is that he would leave really fair feedback. Heād talk about how sensei is obviously brilliant and knowledgeable, but that he has a poor pedagogical approach. Hirato would then proceed to list out a very detailed number of suggestions for improvement. They would all be substantial insofar as theyād be designed to incite senseiās rage. Heād say things like,Ā āSensei might be well-served by preparing PowerPoint slides to accompany his lecture. It is true that senseiās lectures are scintillating and exceedingly informative, but not having a visual aid of any sort means that oneās attention is directed solely to the sound of senseiās voice as it resounds throughout the room. Senseiās voice is so pleasing that it might, without visual aids, lull the less diligent of our number to sleep.ā And thereād be like twenty-some so-called suggestions.
And of course, Akari would know exactly who wrote that particular eval.Ā
