from 'harpies' series watercolor and ink on paper
Harpy eagle sketchdump
Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) "The biggest eagle in Bolivia is also one of the largest raptors on the planet. The Harpy Eagle persists in tiny populations in intact humid forests in Amazonian and Andean foothills like Loma Santa, where the birds perch and hunt within the canopy, rarely flying above it." ~ MarÃa Paula Rubiano A. Audubon Magazine.
what bird made you interested in ornithology (study of birds)
for me it was the harpy eagle (harpia harpyja) when i read michael wright's: the world of birds. this book helped me get into ornithology, but i always been an avid reader and fan of animals either way sooo 0v0
( i can do book recommendations next post! idk i have a lot of zoology related books !! )
i really liked how the name of the eagle was based off harpies in greek mythology since i used to look at random greek mythology books but only for the art xD
i also liked how the harpy eagle was one of the largest eagles and also the eagle's color palette! the blacks, grays, and, whites all mesh together to create a cool and elegant looking eagle!
and the fact the harpy lives in rainforests (which i love!! there are always so many biodiverse species in there!! <333) made me more intrigued to learn more about other birds from the rainforest :D
Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja), Order: Accipitriformes, Family: Accipitridae, Genus: Harpia, Harpy eagles are found mainly in South America and Central America, Photography by: Daniel Mideros and Sebastian Di Domenico

got hit with sudden desire to draw ancient creaturas and now I have Them. The Creatura Girlies. It’s lowkey Dunmeshi fault because how can one read it and not become obsessed with Creatura Girlies??
Some close ups
can you guess all of them?
These eagles are the most powerful prey birds nowadays. -Crowned Eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus),. -Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) -Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja)
Harpy and Philippine eagles also happen to be the national birds of Panama and Philippine islands.
And all of them happen to share many traits that make them to be that powerful, in spite they aren't closed related besides the fact to belong to the large acciprite family.
Why?
Well, these eagles live in dense tropical forest, and mostly of their meals happen to be... monkeys (among others, of course). In order to capture them, they have to be really fast and deadly, otherwise their preys may cause a serious damage to them. Hence, their claws are so thick and powerful than can crush a monkey' skull in seconds, being stronger more than any other living prey.
Also, their size is quite large, but they wings happen to be quite short because they have to fly across the forest without problem, and being helped with a long tail. A regular golden eagle, being smaller, has longer wings and shorter tails.
Finally, their feathers also are similar. All of them are crowned by feathers and their bellies are white along their backs are darker. Here, you can see the resemblances...
Without any doubt, they're really beautiful.
