Novel, Love, and the Blooming Flowers
“Do you always know what people think?”
“Not always. But I do with you. You don’t have to pretend you love me. That’s over for the evening. Is there anything you’d like to talk about?”
“But I do love you.”
- Excerpt from “A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemingway
This is a conversation between Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley in “A Farewell to Arms”. The conversation itself seems to be very romantic. Frederic, however, is not that into Catherine at this point. He lies to her instead, claiming that he loves her.
I am wondering why some men, if not all, lie to women even if they are not attracted to those females, like Frederic and Catherine's case here. As a female myself, I have to guess from a male’s perspective that some guys simply crave for close physical contact with women (a.k.a sex) and others are probably protecting women’s feelings by NOT saying that they do not love the women. Hence, they say “I love you” instead.
I might be wrong in those guesses, but I do believe that most of us are praying for that genuine love - no more deception, fakeness, or sham. Love is a mutual process. We need to learn both how to love and be loved. ❤︎ Stay true to yourself and your feelings. If you love someone, tell them. If someone loves you, treasure their love. Never belittle or even hurt their love because they are human beings as well. They have their own soul and self-esteem. If you are, however, not into them, please let them know your honest opinion - but do it gently. That way, you are not wasting neither your nor their time and energy by giving them opportunities to meet new people, re-think about whom they truly want to be with, and wait for their own, real, and precious love. Love deserves honesty, perpetualness, and a sense of warmth.
* The above is just my personal opinion. I have a few friends who were lost in love and eventually got hurt from it. I wish they can heal the pain from the past, find their lost selves, and eventually re-build their lives.
If you have a different interpretation for love, please comment down below. Diversity is welcomed, but bad words and bully are not allowed. Thanks!
