We put a spotlight on the historic New York home of Founding Father  Alexander Hamilton, now a modern celebrity thanks to the Broadway show "Hamilton."

Happy birthday to Founding Father, first US Treasury Secretary, (and rapper?) Alexander Hamilton! Hamilton's home from 1802 - 1804, The Grange, was moved 500 feet in 2008 to its current home in St. Nicholas Park. In 1889 the Grange – located at 143rd and Convent Ave in today's Hamilton Heights/ City College section of Harlem – was facing foreclosure and demolition in order to implement the Manhattan Street Grid. To save it from destruction, St. Luke's Church acquired the house and moved it to 287 Convent Avenue, two blocks south and half a block east, a lot that was protected from the new street grid. In 1960 it was designated a National Historic Landmark and acquired by the National Park Service. In 2006 it was decided that the site of St. Nicholas park would be a more appropriate location for preservation and restoration, also within the boundary of Hamilton's original 32-acre estate. The Grange was cranked up, placed on stilts and slowly moved 500-feet in six hours where it was finally secured to a new foundation. The structure was restored to appear as Hamilton knew it in 1802–1804, with its original entrance, staircase and landscaping, including 13 sweet gum trees Hamilton had planted to symbolize the original 13 states. You can visit the Grange today to see the house as it was when the Hamiltons originally moved up to Harlem! I joined @silk.and.sass1776 and the Hearts of Oak for Caribbean Day at Hamilton Grange. I talked about Hercules Mulligan, Hamilton's affinity for flashy clothing, and the history of tape measures. Mostly I stood around and looked pretty, and that was fine. There was Caribbean music, dance, and storytelling, and I wasn't about to compete with that.
