Alexander Hamilton Dies After Infamous Duel With Aaron Burr
On July 12, 1804, former United States Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton died from wounds suffered in a pistol duel with Vice President Aaron Burr the previous day near Weehawken, New Jersey. The deadly confrontation ended a long-running political rivalry between two of America’s most prominent figures.
Hamilton, a key architect of the U.S. financial system and a leading voice during the founding of the nation, was carried back to New York after being shot. His death at the age of 47 shocked the young republic and sparked widespread mourning.
