the symbolism of an antagonist company being called hameln is so smart. it’s a play on the city hamelin, most famously renowned for its historical tale of the pied piper, hired to lure the rats out of the infested city. once the mayor turns around and refuses to grant him his requested large sum of gold in return for his work, the pied piper retaliates. he performs a newer, more hypnotic tune, leading all 130 kids of hamelin to the mountains where they subsequently vanish.
id like to see it as how hameln promised sam they’d make his show great—enticing him into signing his daughter up for their satanic rituals and, simplified, torture. the stories dont exactly line up, but i saw it as rebecca rebelled for him in her own ways, and technically riley too.

I remember when I first saw this moment:
I predicted that while Wooly was threatening the player/Riley because Wooly was obviously a representative of Hameln in some sort of way, I *also* predicted that when he stressed "anything", he was also possibly referring to what happened to him and everyone else as victims of Hameln.
To put it more simply, to me he was/is saying: "You can't change anything. The damage has already been done. So give up." Kind of like, he was talking to himself as much he was Riley.
I don't know, just something about his tone sounds like someone who has given up and is bitter. Especially bitter that he let himself get pushed around so long and be manipulated.
