Forget state records, hail from Monday night’s storm near Kankakee, Illinois MAY be pushing WORLD RECORD size IF found to be true. Though admittedly I’m a little suspicious about it…
We’ve seen multiple reports of hailstones over 6 inches in diameter from this storm which is already extremely rare. But the hailstone in this photo is being estimated around 8 inches across.
⚠️ If that estimate holds up after official measurement, it would be approaching the current U.S. and WORLD record of 8 inches, set in Vivian, South Dakota in 2010.
The National Weather Service has been notified, and the stone will need to be examined and officially measured.
🧊 If confirmed, this could be one of the largest hailstones ever documented.
