Guan Eng wants NST punished for ‘gutter journalism’

KUALA LUMPUR, April 13:

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today that local daily New Straits Times should be “severely punished” for its exploitation of the MH370 tragedy, referring to its “World Exclusive” published yesterday.

In its exclusive front-page report, NST claimed that the co-pilot of the missing aircraft made a telephone call when it was flying low near Penang on the day it disappeared.

However, acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein refuted the report on the same day and deemed it irresponsible of media outlets that took the opportunity to make baseless reports.

In Lim’s statement today, the Chief Minister said the daily exploited the issue, “with treacherous intent of sensational and false reporting without due regard for facts and the feelings of family members of the passengers”.

He acknowledged Hishamuddin’s refutal of the report and called the “so called world exclusive” a blatant lie.

“A public reprimand that is a mere slap on the wrist on NST is not enough. Such lies and baseless information may not only affect search operations, but also the families of the passengers and the crew.

“The federal government must be both unforgiving and punishing towards NST, more so when it is owned by Umno and a mouthpiece for BN leaders.”

Putting a spotlight on the government, Lim said its failure to take action against the lies reported would cause Malaysia to lose any remaining credibility and integrity in its international reputation.

“Further, any inaction may even hamper and jeopardise efforts by the Malaysian government towards the restoration of trade, tourism and goodwill of Chinese investors, tourists and people.”
