Tuesday, May 7: Gurd, “What Do You Live For”
In the annals of Swiss metal, there was Krokus, then Celtic Frost (preceded by Hellhammer, of course), and then… Gurd. Certainly the least known of the lot, and not really benefiting from being signed to Century Media, but the Bern-based group actually did carry on Frost’s legacy in that their style of aggro metal didn’t fit with the power metal permeating the scene at the time. If anything, Gurd was almost like a fusion of Pantera and Korn, but also Swiss. “What Do You Live For” was indicative of this amalgamation, with V.O. Pulver barking like both Phil Anselmo and Jonathan Davis while Pulver and Phil (just “Phil”) riffed with both thrashy crunch and nu metal groove. It was a strange concoction, and it didn’t totally hit the mark, but Gurd was doing something different relative to the rest of the continent, and even if the touchstones are clear to American ears, this didn’t feel like the group was jumping on bandwagons so much as absorbing a mix of influences. And in its way, “What Do You Live For” captured the era pretty well, basically encapsulating most of what was going on in metal at the time.
