A light Spring breeze sweeps across the Salinas Valley as Southern Pacific GS-6 No. 4464 idles with a freight train a few miles north of King City, California. Southern Pacific ordered the GS-6 from Lima during WWII as a more austere version of their famous line of 4-8-4’s, lacking the side-skirting and colorful Daylight paint scheme. As such, they were nicknamed “war babies”.
The Western Pacific was in need of more motive power, so six of the GS-6’s were diverted to the smaller, power-starved railroad and designated the class GS-64. These six lacked any SP-patented features but were given boosters in the trailing truck. They were later fitted with smoke deflectors. When the WP was dieselized, some of this class was sold to SP as sources for spare parts without their tenders.
