How Mordred was slain by Arthur, and how by him Arthur was hurt to the death, Illustration by Alfred Pollard / Vulgate: Death of Arthur / more at Arthurian Preservation Project
a passage i think about all the time. the ray of sunlight in the wound is also mentioned in dante's inferno in canto XXXII, where mordred is in the 9th circle of hell. he's submerged in a frozen lake in caina, for treachery towards kin.
pretty neat!
They could have snuck parts of Jaufre into Monty Python and the Holy Grail and no one would have noticed a stylistic difference.
--A wicked knight describing to Jaufre (Griflet) what a knight who touches his lance can do to obtain his mercy as an alternative to being killed after a fight
this may just be the sleep deprivation talking but I’ve decided that sir griflet is sexy now. everyone in camelot regardless of orientation has looked at him at least once and gone. huh. but then the moment passes and they’re just like. well that was weird. no one, least of all him, would believe that he is the common denominator for what arthurian lords and ladies find attractive.¹ listen listen listen. we can reasonably combine his character with that of sir givret from erec et enide² and if we consult the sacred texts³ it is apparent that givret is 1) fantastically short, 2) undeniably charming, and 3) roguishly intelligent. doesn’t that sound like someone else we know? BUT! but but but. griflet/givret is a shorter king than gawain AND not even half as problematic.⁴ why are we as a fandom sleeping on him. why weren’t enough people sleeping with him in medlit.⁵ when I’m finally able to draw him you’ll see what I’m talking about. you’ll all see.⁶
¹ effeminate men with beards. you agree.
² source: trust me bro aside from his bit in one romance givret’s practically just a name. whereas griflet is a whole ass guy and it would be FUN to smoosh em together let me have this
³ illustrated gerald morris novella written for an audience of five-year-olds
⁴ obligatory clarification because I’m a coward. I am #jesting and if gawain is indeed problematic (gawain. sir gawain from medlit. that gawain. him) it makes him hotter <3
⁵ I’m pretty sure he has a magic wife in jaufre (idk I haven’t read it yet) but that’s not enough for me. I want this man to be the protagonist of a series of trashy noir detective novels in which he always ends up bamboozling the villains through sheer luck & plucky intellect whilst effortlessly romancing a new side piece each book. you know what I mean.
⁶ I have a very vivid picture of him in my head (basically just the handsome Guatemalan man I met once at a bus stop) but it won’t translate to paper. so instead of practicing drawing I’m writing to convince you all how sexy griflet is. is it working.

More knightly portraits, this time of Ser Bedwyr and Ser Griflet. I enjoy seeing how much progress I can make in a few short months.
Day 34:
Did you know there are versions where Bedivere wasn’t even asked to take Excalibur to the lake? There is one where it was actually Bedivere’s cousin, Griflet who was also one of the first few knights to join the table.
in another version, Griflet dies to Lancelot during the time when he was trying to rescue Queen Guinever from being executed.
The duty of returning the sword was also once given to Lucan(Bedivere’s brother) but typically his role after Arthur is mortall wounded by Mordred is to help Bedivere transport the king to a safer location but his old wounds open up back up and he dies from blood loss
