I’m trying to redesign Cedar Wood to look more like a historic wooden doll, and holy shit is there not an option that isn’t absolutely terrifying.
It’d be funny as hell if every other character in EAH had the same pretty, perfect model face, and then there was just this bat-shit scary homunculus standing in the scene.
Was anyone going to tell me that EAH Pinocchio was a 10/10 cutie-patootie. Or was I supposed to learn that myself?
That being said, not wooden enough. I do like that the comics at least include black features instead of reusing the same face-mold like the show. But that is not a puppet, that’s a Regular Human Dude in a lederhosen.

I think EAH missed a trick by not dissecting modern misinterpretations of specific fairytales more. I know they did the general ‘Girl Power, Damsel in Distress’ thing, and there’s the whole arc about how horrifying Sleeping Beauty’s curse really is.
But I was thinking about The Ugly Ducking today, and remembered how it’s so misunderstood.
The Ugly Duckling becoming a swan isn’t telling the message of ‘It’s okay if you’re ugly as long as one day you’ll become beautiful, and only then will the bullying you faced be wrong’.
That story is about not trying to force yourself into a community that will only accept you if you force yourself into matching them. Instead, leave and find where you fit in all on your own. Because beauty doesn’t always look like one thing; you can look wildly different from everyone around you, and that doesn’t make you ugly.
With multiple characters whose self-worth hinges on being ‘perfect’ (Apple, Daring) or who try to force themselves into something they’re not (Cerise, Blondie and Ashlynn being commoners in the Royal cliche, literally every Rebel) it could’ve been an interesting character to explore.

A majority of the time when discussing EAH characters I defer to the original myths and their written interpretations. But when thinking about Meeshell, I realised it’s the one character genuinely do prefer the Disney version of.
There’s nothing wrong with a characters outward motivation being Romance and True Love, but it would be pretty sick to have Meeshell have a scientific, obsessive interest in human nature if she’s being exposed to it for the first time.
Meeshell’s brief screentime in her one episode makes her nothing more than a shy, but otherwise ordinary girl. Missed opportunity.
I know Ramona Badwolf was designed like that to sell dolls (and the sexist fear of a girl looking ‘too ugly’), I wish she had looked like an actual monster with a few hidden human details. Cerise’s natural opposite.
(Not a wolf with human ears, that would look insane obviously. A wolf with human teeth; which is way scarier and infinitely grosser. She wears false fangs over her real ones instead).
(In fact I wish The Big Bad Wolf didn’t have a human form. Commit to Riding Hood being a furry you cowards)
