I'm crying. Jaufre might be the wildest tale in the Matthews' translation collections. Arthur jumping on a beast, and being dragged away. Kay almost fainting, all the knights taking off their clothes to make some kind of cushion at the bottom of a cliff in case Arthur falls.

Having just finished Jaufre, this character reveal gave me the biggest whiplash when I realized what it meant.

In Jaufre, there's this subplot where a mysterious young lady comes to King Arthur to beg assistance against an evil knight besieging her. Unfortunately, Arthur isn't able to provide help because all the other knights are busy, causing this lady to turn to Jaufre instead.

At a later point in the story, this lady then essentially kidnaps Jaufre, bringing him to defend her and her kingdom, which is located underground and accessed through a magic fountain. After defeating her enemy, she then lets him return to his companions.

At the end of the romance, the Lady returns to thank Jaufre for his service and throws a celebration. The Lady reveals her true identity as Fada de Gibel ("Fairy of Gibel") and blesses Jaufre, his wife and his friend Melian with magic powers.

"The Fairy of Gibel" is another name for Morgan le Fay, with "Gibel" being the Italian name for Mount Etna ("Mongibello"), one of the IRL places associated with Morgan le Fay in folklore.
