he'd fallen asleep in the abysmally uncomfortable hospital chair, anxiously twisting his wedding band around his finger. the team had come by after the game, bringing shane a change of clothes and all their stuff from the rink. the team was already flying back to ottawa, but naturally shane would stay with ilya until the doctors cleared him to fly. so, asleep, but barely, shane startled awake, blinking to clear the sleep from his eyes and reaching to put on his glasses. as the lenses slid in front of his eyes, he could finally see that ilya was awake, looking at him. ' hey. how long have you been awake? are you feeling ok? i can go get a doctor. '

noah's  heart  gave  an  uncomfortable  lurch  hearing  those  words  from  eric  -  maybe  he'd  wanted  to  hear  them,  but  at  the  same  time  they  were  also  IMPOSSIBLY  painful  to  hear  because  what  did  that  even  mean  now  ??  a  lifetime  of  friendship  had  washed  down  the  drain  and  left  him  parched  and  dry,  his  claws  had  all  been  filed  down  over  time  just  to  leave  behind  a  longing  of  what  had  been  LOST  and  left  behind,  and  while  once  he  would  have  had  something  to  fire  back  in  place  he  just  felt  like  a  puppy  that  had  it's  tail  trodden  on  to  hear  them  now.

james  couldn't  help  the  slight  POUT  that  found  it's  way  to  his  lips  -  sure  people  might  not  care,  but  james  cared  perhaps  too  much.  he  definitely  had  the  fear  of  missing  out  on  anything  and  everything,  then  there  was  the  idea  that  not  going  might  paint  him  in  a  bad  light,  as  much  as  james  TRIED  to  appear  like  opinions  didn't  matter  to  him,  they  did.

the  strategy  meeting  hasn't  started  yet,  and  probably  won't  for  another  ten  minutes,  if  the  clock  on  wren's  phone  is  anything  to  go  by,  which  it  is,  because  they've  been  checking  on  it  profusely,  as  if  they've  got  somewhere  better  to  be  even  when  they  don't.  the  hallway  outside  the  room  smells  like  generic  air  conditioning  and  carpet  that's  been  cleaned  too  many  times,  and  wren  has  their  back  against  the  wall  with  their  arms  crossed,  watching  rembrandt  from  the  corner  of  their  eye.  it's  never  made  sense  to  them,  the  way  the younger driver had just  walked  into  red  bull  and  immediately  started  collecting  championships  like  that  was  something  you  could  just  do,  like  wren  hadn't  been  there  first,  grinding  through  seasons,  developing  the  car,  and  they  know  seniority  means  nothing  in  the  sport,  most  definitely  not  in  red  bull,  but  wren  also  didn't  like  the  feeling  of  being  discarded  like  they  were  yesterday's  news.

the  holding  room  for  the  drivers'  parade  is  more  so  a  hallway  between  restrooms  and  random  hospitality  suites,  and  hari  has  decided,  in  the  five  or  so  minutes  since  he  arrived,  that  he  is  not  going  to  let  this  ruin  his  mood,  because  his  mood  is  excellent,  because  he  is  in  australia,  because  he  is  about  to  be  driven  through  albert  park  on  a  mini  moke  (whatever  that  is!)  like  he's  someone  who  deserves  to  be  here,  which  he  is,  which  he  has  always  been,  but  which  is  now  becoming  increasingly  difficult  for  the  rest  of  the  world  to  argue  with.  he  finds  kernes  near  the  far  wall  and  migrates  toward  him,  dropping  into  the  space  beside  him  and  immediately  starting  to  talk.

the  ps5  was  the  first  thing  she  unpacked,  which  probably  says  something  about  her,  though  farhana  hasn't  decided  what  yet.  the  hotel  room  is  fine   ( and  it's  always  fine,  they're  always  fine,  beige  and  inoffensive  and  extremely  identical  to  the  last  one  she  had  in  bahrain  in  february,  and  then  in  abu  dhabi  last  december,  and  in— )   and  she's  got  the  tv  on  and  a  controller  in  her  hand,  which  is  the  most  okay  she's  felt  since  she  climbed  out  of  the  car  this  afternoon.  p19.  she's  turned  her  result  over  in  her  head  approximately  forty  times  since  the  podium  ceremony  she  wasn't  on,  picked  at  it  like  an  old  scab  that  she  probably  shouldn't  pick  on,  and  the  conclusion  she  keeps  arriving  at  is  that  it  was  the  car  and  also  maybe  slightlyyyy  her  and  she  DOESN'T  want  to  talk  about  it,  hence  fortnite,  hence…  this.

he  doesn't  know  when  his  motorhome  turned  into  a  makeshift  hangout  spot  for  the  lost  souls.  doesn't  know  when  the  title  of  ❛  family  man  ❜  extended  itself  past  the  family  home  and  onto  the  makeshift  gardens  that  pop  up  like  blooming  flowers  around  the  tracks.  maybe  it's  the  barbecue  he  drags  along  to  every  race,  or  the  always-stocked-to-the-brim  cooler.  most  likely,  it's  the  fact  that  the  old  man  poses  no  threat  to  the  glory  of  the  young.  ❝  do  i  really  need  to  tell  you  kids  to  get  off  my  lawn,  or  am  i  not  that  old  yet  ?  ❞
