"A Friend of Mine"
I'd like to talk about what I think is a moment of brilliant, understated storytelling in Gotham Central #17-18 featuring the Huntress and Det. Sgt. Vincent Del Arrazio.
"Soft hearted" Sgt. Del Arrazio retired early to "take care of his dog", leaving his Major Crimes colleagues to gossip about his FBI past and rumoured connections. The sergeant clearly keeps his cards close to his chest and we get a hint of why when he secretly contacts the Huntress for intel.
We learn that Del Arrazio is well acquainted with the Huntress. He called her to his house. She says "it's been a while". He stands face to face with her and his dog doesn't bark either. He invites her in. He teases her about her costume and she takes it. He offers her an espresso🇮🇹. She knows he is divorced and teases him back for displaying an old wedding photo. She knows about his mafioso relatives. He tells her "you know damn well" that he doesn't want anything to do with the Inzerillos, and she ribs him for still talking to his mafia boss uncle, joking that "things change" as if he'd ever think of getting into the family business. Considering the playfulness of the interaction, I'm almost certain "it's been a while, Vincent" is a joke too, and they have actually worked together recently!
We learn a hell of a lot about Del Arrazio and why he's so secretive. Not only is he the nephew of one of the Five Families' Dons, but he secretly works with a vigilante mafia-princess-turned-mob-buster! I think we learn a lot about the Huntress too, in how friendly the "nightmare to the underworld" can be, even in costume. I think she yearns for connection, just as anybody does, and Del Arrazio is a kindred spirit to her; they're both dedicating their lives to taking down the mafia empire they were born into.
Breaking eye contact, Huntress then promptly passed on her intel; that Del Arrazio's mafioso cousin Jack Inzerillo was in business with the firm which Major Crimes were investigating after the murder of two of their accountants. And she leaves swiftly, as if she was never there.
Those last two panels read as rather bittersweet to me. A second ago, Rucka was teasing a more personal relationship between the two, something almost friendly. All business is personal to these two but, in a sense, they have their own "code of silence" which they must honour to protect their line of work. Maybe she'll let you make her a coffee next time, Vincent.

It's only a small detail in the greater scheme of things, and wouldn't even make "Top 20" in best written moments in the series, but there's a bit in the excellent "Gotham Central" which stuck with me. The squad lose a Lieutenant in the line of duty, and after solving the case are going to get a new one, as the final paperwork is done. Sarge Davies is up for it, he is the Squad Sergeant after all, and is a veteran here well liked and well loved by his colleagues. But then he is denied, and instead Mayor Hull (former Deputy Mayor, but now in the position after his predecessor was the first victim in this aforementioned case) transfers in a political appointee, a friend and buddy of his whom he promised a cushy, good job to. This is Lieutenant David Cornwell formerly of the Organised Crime Bureau, and he is not well liked immediately. They all start to call him "Cornhole", he has a moustache, he looks like a pencil pusher, he's a political appointee, none of them know him. And for the rest of the series? He's actually a fucking stand up guy, a good manager, a good LT and never engages in police brutality. I just find it kind of cute.
